✨ Caredig has become the latest housing association to adopt the Sustainability Reporting Standard for Social Housing (SRS). Based in Swansea, Caredig manages over 2,900 affordable homes across South and West Wales and is committed to creating great places to live and work. Interesting to hear Rachel Reeves talking about the Labour party approach to solving the crisis in Housing in the UK. Clearly there will be tension between the demand for more homes, economic growth and issues such as greenfield sites, the provision of services along with solutions to the real crisis in rentals and its effect on homelessness. Building on grey belt is one solution but it can lead to infill and then further demand upon Greenfield sites. Niche brownfield sites, retro fitting and the bringing back into use of empty homes and High Streets must surely be the starting point. Planning has been a real problem to us in the development of the Stourbridge PowerHaus and any streamlining of the process and a more enabling approach is welcomed. Here at wMUCh I have already made progress on that issue working with Birmingham City Council affordable housing team as part of a new CLH policy. Working as wMUCH my aim is to extend that approach to all local authorities in the region. Here in Stourbridge as Stourbridge CLT we have taken a balanced approach in supporting campaigns to protect valuable green space such as the Corbett Meadow whilst at the same time moving forward with development of affordable homes for rent on a brownfield site on Enville Street. Engagement with communities and local authorities and sensible balanced conversations around the demands for growth in the economy alongside the demands for sustainable communities and the issue of climate change will provide the answer, however everyone needs to take a pragmatic approach and this will of course involve compromise on all sides. Recent studies and our own work point to the fact that investment of £1 in Community Led Housing leads to a return of £3 to local economies . There is billions locked up in the development and engagement of local communities. 🏘️ Eastlight Community Homes has become the latest housing provider to adopt the Sustainability Reporting Standard for Social Housing (SRS). Eastlight is a resident-led housing association for the East of England that owns and looks after 14,500 homes consisting of social rent, affordable rent and shared ownership. Jo Barrett, Executive Director of Strategy, Governance & Assurance at Eastlight, said: “We are thrilled to have joined over 100 UK housing associations in adopting the Sustainability Reporting Standard for Social Housing (SRS). “Sustainability is a core part of Eastlight. Really pleased that Hounslow's Regulation 19 Local Plan is now out for consultation 🚀 A really massive milestone reached! 🎯 Getting to this stage reflects years of hard work from our brilliant Spatial Planning Service at London Borough of Hounslow. The Local Plan outlines the Council’s vision for future development and aims to meet the housing, environmental, and economic needs of Hounslow’s growing community. By 2041, the Local Plan plans for the delivery of 28,800 new homes, ensuring more high-quality, affordable housing, particularly for those in need of social housing. The plan also tackles the climate emergency by requiring new developments to be more sustainable and energy efficient. A carbon offset rate will be introduced, ensuring that new developments support the Council’s efforts to reduce emissions, contributing to Hounslow’s Climate Emergency Action Plan. Economic growth is another key focus. The Local Plan will plan for the creation of over 20,000 new jobs, unlocking 55 hectares of land by supporting life blood industries such as aviation, especially near Heathrow Airport, and boosting the borough’s growing creative sector in the east. By strengthening Hounslow’s role as a gateway to London from Heathrow and the M4 corridor, the plan aims to ensure the borough continues to play a major role in London’s economy. Environmental improvements are central to the Local Plan. It will increase green spaces across the borough, enhance connections between parks and waterways, and support biodiversity. The plan prioritises the creation of greener urban areas while also protecting and improving public access to open spaces, including Green Belt land and Metropolitan Open Land. There are 1.7million individuals currently renting in shared accommodation in urban centres.
