The updated South West Local Jobs Plan is now live! In the South West our priorities for outcomes with employment, skills and participation are: 1.     Address complex barriers with a person centred approach 2.     Use existing programming and incentives 3.     Industry and Jobs exposure, apprenticeship, traineeship and training uptake 4.     Employer support for staff attraction and retention These priorities are identified using information gathered through the South West Local Jobs Taskforce and are an integral part of Employment Project Fund and Local Recovery Funding opportunities for the region. It has been a whirlwind of activity for the team at Opportunity Place - Nova Scotia Works the last couple of weeks. One of these great initiatives and learning opportunities the team had the opportunity to participate in plays or could play a key part in addressing today's labour market challenges, the "RPL in Nova Scotia. Here to Stay" Forum hosted by the NSCDA last month. Challenges finding and keeping talent? Jeremy McQuigge, C.Mgr. shared that the trifecta of lived experience, occupational recognition, and academic recognition needs to be in balance. Further, today's labour market needs recognition of prior learning (RPL), individually owned wallets, standards of practice, and all hands on deck, which fits very well with the United Nations Goal #8 of decent work and economic growth. All of which is a great fit with the cornerstone of any recruitment and retention, a competency based job description (CBJD). Further, Judith (Judy) Dixon of the Automotive Sector Council of Nova Scotia shared that recognition of prior learning is a quicker and efficient way to get talent engaged and trained towards certification, such as newcomers, youth with barriers, direct entry apprentices, etc. It also needs to be recognized that not everyone's path is the same so it is important to give talent the opportunity to demonstrate what they can do (contribute) and learn. In summary, CBJD + RPL improves the odds of recruiting, developing, and keeping the talent employers need today and in the future. The #CanHousingPlan will enhance the workforce needed to build more homes across the country. The four commitments are: 1. Commit to reporting on the professional development of housing staff as part of the Annual Assurance Statement process. 2. Ensure that training and qualifications for housing staff are written into your organisation’s business plans. 3. Commit to regular engagement with schools and learners about housing sector careers. 4. Promotion of the value of CPD across staff/customer boundaries. Not a housing provider? Read our report here: https://bit.ly/42XEZcL Win: Budget 2024 proposes a $100 million investment over two years to Employment and Social Development Canada, starting in 2024-25. $90 million will be directed to the Apprenticeship Service to help create placements with small and medium-sized enterprises. The remaining $10 million will go towards the Skilled Trades Awareness and Readiness Program to encourage Canadians to explore and prepare for careers in the skilled trades. We’re delighted to launch our fresh skills and employability plan to help tackle major workforce challenges facing the county. The plan outlines the programmes we’ll deliver along with our partners throughout 2024 to address the major issues of a declining working age population and acute skills shortage in disciplines that are key to the success and growth of Cumbria’s economy. Building on the success of previous years, the programmes have been designed to provide people with opportunities to enhance their skills and boost their chances of securing employment. The plan includes work experience for young people and adults, the Freedom Project employability programme, Creating Careers in Construction, The Apprenticeship Ready programme and the hugely successful Festival of Work, which last year attracted over 1,000 young people.
