AI customer support agents work best with the 'long tail' of questions that customers ask. The ones that, if you were to make a chat flow for would make you want to gouge your eyes out. People often want to use AI to handle all their incoming tickets, but, some tickets just don't need it. The saying: "If the only tool you have is a hammer, it is tempting to treat everything as if it were a nail" comes to mind. I'd say AI is overkill and probably not the right tool for the job if: - You want to collect data about a user or a bug - The user just wants to book a demo - It is a very, very common question that requires a very specific solution For these, you should guide your user down a different path (and save any AI costs!) Hear me out, lame analogy incoming: AI is the Roomba of Customer Support ...right? A friend once told me, "Roombas are cool because they do a good first pass, but usually, you need to do another pass to finish the job." AI support in its current state is similar, is it not? Whether it's chatbots, ticket deflection, agent assist, or otherwise... it's super useful as a first pass, but still leaves room for human effort. The only difference is one is meant to suck a lot and the other is meant to suck a little. Agree or am I off my rocker? 😂

But in reality, it’s quite the opposite. When AI takes care of repetitive tasks, we have more time to focus on complex issues that need a human touch, such as understanding a customer's frustration or providing personalized solutions. 💯 Instead of being bogged down by the routine, we spend more time on the interactions that matter most. When you ask a customer how they rate their experience, what do you think happens? Do you think you get honest feedback always? But let's take a step back, why would you ask when you already know? You have the conversation, you know what happened. So why ask? AI can do the analysis for you – understand how the customer felt, what went right, what could have gone better, what customers are unhappy about overall, etc. Let AI handle that, and let humans do the real heavy lifting of handling customers, managing escalations, solving problems, and providing real customer delight.
