#Europe and #Africa were last connected by a landmass over 5.3 million years ago. This was a time when the Mediterranean Sea's level drastically fell, creating a land bridge between the two continents at the location of today's Strait of Gibraltar. Then, this connection was severed by a massive flooding event, separating Europe and Africa and shaping the Mediterranean Sea as we know it. But, this historical separation might soon change, for no other reason than the World Football Championship set to be held in #Spain, #Portugal, and #Morocco in 2030! This global tournament, expected to draw millions of fans from around the world, has reignited interest in an ambitious project that dates back over 90 years - the construction of a railway tunnel beneath the Strait of Gibraltar! In this video, Railways Explained tried to give you a breakdown of this unique potential mega infrastructure project, including its political roots, previous efforts to start this project, the technical side of the project (is it even possible?), and finally, from the economic perspective, would it be worth?
Connecting Europe and Africa by Rail? Is it even possible? (The Gibraltar Tunnel)
