Media viability and sustainability is back at the centre stage of media development across the world, more so in the Global South in which media has struggled with inherent viability and sustainability issues, worsened by Covid-19 and a challenges on adaptation to changing technology. The relevance and role of media and journalism is being questioned in many ways as society(ies) can now generate content without the "mediation" of the profession and industry. But is it true that there is no "mediation" or it has simply shifted somewhere? And can the world do without quality and professional journalism in this age of increasing mis and disinformation? This matter needs a multi-stakeholder approach inclusive of African GVTs who are amongst big ads spenders and can equally support media in various ways. The discussion is global as the little in African online ads revenue is not staying in Africa but ending in the pockets of BigTech such as Google and Meta. In the absence of coordinated efforts, Africa media faces an uncertain future. IMS is taking a lead on this matter hence this latest offering led by the IMS Journalism Hub Team Clare Cook . Happy to hear your comments and views, more so what can be done, what are you doing and what are your experiences in addressing issues of media viability in Africa?

Combating mis- and disinformation is obviously an important and timely topic of our times. The World Economic Forum has put it as the number 1 risk for the world in 2024 and 2025. UNESCO is contributing to global efforts to combat harmful online content and has been working on both the supply of and demand for online information. On the supply side, we developed through a multistakeholder approach global guidelines for the governance of digital platforms, which we published last year and are currently being regionally/locally contextualized for implementation. On the demand/usage side, we developed curricula and content on media and information literacy (MIL) in the digital age and made them available to Member States so they can integrate them into their educational systems. Our objective is to make users of digital platforms and social media become media & information literate and be able to distinguish between fact-checked information and mis-/disinformation. One of our messages on MIL (which is also the title of a recent UNESCO publication) is: « Think critically, Click wisely »! Feel free to sign up for this new online course. I hope that you find it informative and helpful.
Media and information literacy is a critical skill for ALL. PR professionals and journalists, I’m speaking with a group of faculty tomorrow about how to put scholarship on the media’s radar. Here are my key points. What else would you tell them? ⭐️ Distill your findings, and your work’s impact, into a single sentence with basic English. TLI5 ⭐️ If your work has policy or health implications, state them. If your research just helps us understand our world better, say that! ⭐️ Ask questions about the journalist’s timeline, publication and fact-checking process. It’s ok to interview the reporter. ⭐️ Recommend other experts. If you’re not the right person to interview, help the reporter find another source!
