📌Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects children. School owners should enlighten her educators about this & how to manage children facing this challenge. #Symptoms ADHD symptoms are generally divided into two categories: inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity. #Inattention: - Difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities. - Frequent careless mistakes in schoolwork or other activities. - Difficulty organizing tasks and activities. - Avoidance or reluctance to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort. - Losing things necessary for tasks (e.g., school supplies, keys). - Easily distracted by extraneous stimuli. - Forgetfulness in daily activities. #Hyperactivity/#Impulsivity: - Fidgeting with or tapping hands or feet. - Difficulty remaining seated in situations where it is expected. - Running or climbing in inappropriate situations. - Inability to play or engage in activities quietly. - Talking excessively. - Interrupting or intruding on others' conversations or games. - Difficulty waiting for one’s turn. #Causes The exact cause of ADHD is not fully understood, but several factors may contribute, including: - Genetics: ADHD tends to run in families, indicating a genetic component. - Brain Structure and Function: Differences in brain structure and activity may be linked to ADHD. - **Environmental Factors**: Exposure to toxins (e.g., lead), prenatal exposure to drugs or alcohol, and low birth weight may increase risk. - Early Childhood Experiences: Adverse childhood experiences or trauma may also play a role. #Diagnosis Diagnosing ADHD typically involves: - Comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare professional, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist. - Gathering information from multiple sources, including parents, teachers, and the individual. - Use of standardized behavior rating scales and checklists. - Assessment of symptoms based on criteria outlined in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). #Treatment Treatment for ADHD often involves a combination of approaches: 1. Behavioral Therapy: - Focuses on modifying behavior through rewards and consequences. - May include parent training and classroom management strategies. 2. Medication: - Stimulants (e.g., methylphenidate, amphetamines) are commonly prescribed and can help improve focus and reduce impulsivity and hyperactivity. - Non-stimulant medications (e.g., atomoxetine) are also available and may be prescribed if stimulants are not effective or cause side effects. 3. Psychoeducation: - Educating individuals and families about ADHD and its management can empower them to cope effectively. 4. Support Services: - Special accommodations in educational settings (e.g., extended time on tests, modified assignments). 5. Lifestyle Modifications: - Encouraging a healthy diet, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep can help manage symptoms.
