Why you do not get a good range for your LoRaWAN deployment? Ironically, the likely reason is the assumed correct antenna. Always get your antenna to reliable vendors like RAKwireless 📶 There are lots of other factor involved like attenuation of signal due to obstruction, not optimized datarate, etc. But majority of the issue (assuming line-of-sight) is just antenna. Wrong resonant freq, bad gain (too high/low), poor coupling, etc. #lora #lorawan #rak #rakwireless

LoRaWAN end-device development story... So you spent hours of assembling the hardware, writing the code, then when you power it on, it just does not want to join the network. You made sure all the OTAA parameters are correct. The frequency was correct. Double checked the code, the LoRaWAN gateway configuration (RAKwireless RAK7268V2 is my indoor gateway recommendation), and checked the LNS. All were good. You needed more support. You sent email to your module vendor. You had discussion. Then found out that the issue is related to power. When building our own device, make sure: - Battery circuit protection is above your current requirement. - LDO regulator can provide enough current output. - Mounting of connectors are correct and reliable/stable. #lora #lorawan #rak #rakwireless

LoRaWAN deployments does not always require city wide coverage range. There are applications were sensors and LoRaWAN devices are only spreadout in a small building, small farms or small/limited areas. This is the perfect usecase for the new outdoor LoRaWAN Gateway of RAKwireless called WisGate SoHo RAK7267. https://lnkd.in/gMR89-2y It has water protected connector at the bottom for power source and for SIM card. Definitely avoiding any water ingress since it has no opening on top and on the sides. One interesting thing with LoRa/LoRaWAN signal is that it can successfully receive signal even if you are below the noise floor. This means you can have "negative" SNR values and still be fine. The question is how fine is fine? One way is to check how much margin you have as you go close to the limit mentioned in Semtech datasheet. The limit goes lower as the spreading factor goes up. Which means the farther you are the higher spreading factor you need. For SF12, you can decode signal even up to -20dB. This means if you get -17 SNR, you only have 3 left to account on some variability - interference, path loss, etc. If you are using RAKwireless modules like the popular RAK3172, you can use LinkCheck (part of LoRaWAN specs) to determine how much margin you have left. This will allow you to see if your uplinks are still within enough limit or already marginal. #lora #lorawan #rak3172 #rak #rakwireless

I often hear the question, "What is the range of RAKwireless LoRaWAN gateway or module?" But this seemingly simple query misses the mark. LoRaWAN's range isn't a fixed value. It's influenced by numerous factors, making a one-size-fits-all answer impossible - antenna used, antenna setup/connectors, tx power, obstruction/environment, etc. This means it can be from few meters to several kilometers.
