As the Carlyle Conversations interview series continues, with key learns from leaders across the UK, it was a pleasure to sit down with Mark Kent CMG, CEO of Scotch Whisky Association. After a very successful career as an Ambassador and Diplomat, Mark joined SWA nearly three years ago and kindly shared some great insight into the importance of the sector in Scotland and the UK, how it has remained so resilient and the potential impact of the upcoming budget. And as has become tradition, he had some brilliant answers to our 'quick fire questions'. Thanks again for taking part Mark, it's easy to see why the industry holds SWA and the work that you do in such high regard. A sense of entitlement belongs no where- but especially not in the board of directors space, where it has been a constant paradigm since class, privilege and business first arose in human society. My test? If you truly believe you are entitled to a board position simply because of who you perceive yourself to be, then I would say no. ( this is not to be confconfused with believing you can bring true value to the board and the organization from their perspective, not yours) I would also add, if you covet the board position, you shouldn’t be there- because your true independent judgment of what’s best for the organization, its staff, stakeholders and customers, will be clouded by your own self preservation. #governance #aicd #oversight #boardofdirectors #companydirector #entitlement #priveledge #responsibility Australian Institute of Company Directors Evan Dukas Anand Tatavarthi Lyn George
Brilliant coverage and the examples are spot on. Good to see such a respected director as Catherine Livingstone leading the way and driving the conversation on board tenure and diversity of thinking. Brilliant keynote selection Australian Institute of Company Directors https://lnkd.in/esBexFRi

Some movements need to mature, and this is one of them. The business environment has the advantage that ideas can be vetted by the results you get instead of a vague notion of what is virtuous. In the business environment, you also get real-time feedback in that the success of the endeavor is the goal. Of course, we also want to make sure that what we do benefits society overall but those measurements are often very nebulous. The point here is that focused, measurable goals are the best way to vet an idea. Couple that with a more thoughtful analysis of what we are looking for from our actions, and we grow. Corporate boards are not installed to boil the ocean or produce heaven on earth, they have a job to do for the company and the stakeholders of that company in the context of business. That should determine 1) who needs to be around the Board table and 2) what they must produce to move the dials. #strategicthinking

Creating a culture where courage, curiosity and compassion can thrive requires people managers equipped to support their teams, especially newcomers. Thank you to WTW and Amanda Scott Jana Mercereau Sarah Gledhill for the chance to have an engaging discussion on ways to enhance people development, leveraging the themes from my book, "The Consultant's Compass: Navigating Success with Courage, Curiosity, and Compassion." A few lessons we explored: * Find ways to quickly leverage new members' strengths as they close any gaps * Identify a buddy who can help navigate the amorphous norms, especially in remote and hybrid workplaces * Value the role of the people manager; it takes time to do it right * Courage, Curiosity and Compassion are not separate attributes but combine to create energy and positive outcomes for clients and colleague The stories and lessons from my book while grounded in consulting apply to most organizations. Anyone else interested in these topics, orders available on Amazon. https://lnkd.in/eYzau3Tk or message me if you'd like to be holding these conversations in your workplaces. #consultantscompass #courage #curiosity #compassion #peoplemanagers #consulting

"You're most likely to regret the risks that you didn't take." It was a pleasure hosting Mary Cianni. PhD at the WTW offices this week. It's fantastic to see the impact that WTW alumni continue to have on the world. Since her time as Global Head of M&A at WTW, she's gone on to be a full-time professor at New York University. And she's published a book, The Consultant's Compass that pulls together insights from her 20+ years of consulting into insights and actions. We reflected on why we became consultants in the first place. Exploring curiosity. Loving ambiguity. Enjoy change. Empathy. Solution-building. Experts. Through an interactive workshop, we discussed how we can bring Courage, Curiosity and Compassion into our roles as leaders and people managers. The Consultant's Compass: https://lnkd.in/ew63YK7R.
