🌶️ Getting drivers to slow down is the hot topic right now. We love how Brandye Hendrickson from the Texas Department of Transportation TxDOT puts it: "If we want to get to zero deaths, we need innovative approaches, and roundabouts are certainly one way to do that." TxDOT is already planning upgrades that will make communities safer for all. 👉read more: https://lnkd.in/gbbf3rzS 📣 Safer roads mean keeping pedestrians top of mind. RRFBs (Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons) are key to making crossings visible and safe -especially at roundabouts. Roundabouts slow drivers, but how do we protect pedestrians at crossings? One of the solutions is the use of RRFBs. Their effectiveness can vary depending on application, location, orientation and other contextual features. I learned quite a few things preparing for this Webinar and hope this on-demand recording will be helpful for anyone who missed it.

HRC continues to celebrate National Pedestrian Safety Month. We're committed to safety and we’re so proud of the projects we’ve had the privilege of being involved with to bring awareness and decrease pedestrian injuries. A recent project was the installation of a HAWK in Grand Rapids. A HAWK beacon (high-intensity activated crosswalk beacon) is a traffic control device used to stop road traffic and allow pedestrians to cross safely. It is officially known as a pedestrian hybrid beacon. The purpose of a HAWK beacon is to allow protected pedestrian crossings, stopping vehicular traffic only as needed. The HAWK beacon is a type of traffic control alternative to traffic control signals and/or where an intersection does not meet traffic signal warrants. #hrcengr #pedestriansafety #CityofGrandRapids

This new study reminds me of another low-cost solution that can help protect pedestrians at intersections. "Centerline hardening" forces drivers to slow down when turning, giving drivers more time to see and react to pedestrians -> https://lnkd.in/d4u52vqN These small steps to make pedestrians safer can really add up.
“Solutions aren’t always complicated,” IIHS President David Harkey said. “We can stop pedestrians from being killed if we make sure drivers see them — but first city planners and road designers have to see the light.” 💡 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/edYSGRCd
