Leap frogging 2 days, and we are here at #WorldWaterDay. #Water - a simple three atom molecule that is essential for all forms of life. While very often taken for granted, the impacts of too little or too much or the effects of bad quality are frequent news headlines. Water is an important consideration across our sites with numerous rainwater harvesting and recycling initiatives in place. Through the development of constructed wetlands, like this one at our CRH / Roadstone Ltd. site in Ireland, we are using #naturebasedsolutions to enhance water quality and provide crucial #wetland #habitats for a variety of plant and animal #species. Everyone needs to do their bit to conserve water resources, check out some of these water saving tips https://lnkd.in/erhDgs38

A good start. The heavier suspended solids and, quite often, the heavy metals clinging to them, end up in the silt and sediment. PAHs, PFASs and nano plastics often either adhere to organic material such as leaf litter, or just get swept along with the flow. Adding a #Biochar filter before the outflow can help capture a lot more of these pollutants before they enter water courses, and protecting vital aquatic ecosystems. TerrAffix Soil Solutions Ltd has done some excellent research on this, and biochar can be produced from biomass harvested as part of routine highway maintenance.
In 2013, SERT installed three silt traps (Downstream Defenders, supplied by Hydro International) beneath the roads of Carshalton to capture contaminated road sediment before it reaches the river. Protecting the gravel bed is essential, as it serves as a habitat for invertebrates and a place where trout bury their eggs. Last week, we emptied these traps, removing approximately two cubic metres of contaminated sludge. This timely maintenance ensures healthier conditions for trout eggs as they prepare to hatch. We extend our gratitude to @SESWater for funding this crucial work. Together, we're safeguarding river health and biodiversity. 🐟🌍 #SustainableWaterways #ConservationSuccess #Biodiversity

We are actively supporting natural resource organisations who are dedicated to enhancing on-the-ground environmental outcomes through the Queensland Government’s Natural Resources Recovery Program (NRRP). In collaboration with Reef Catchments, we are protecting and preserving wetlands that play a crucial role in the health of the Great Barrier Reef. By implementing pests management across 75,000 hectares, improving grazing and cane management with treatment trains (chain of ponds), and engaging in revegetation efforts, we collectively re-establish native vegetation, improve connectivity, reduce pollutant and enhance water quality. This not only helps reduce run-off to our Reef but also improves landholders' productivity and profitability. This treatment train in Jane’s Creek, near Mackay, is a great example of this success. It slows down the movement of water, allowing sediment to settle and nutrients to breakdown in ponds before entering the creek system and eventually reaching the Great Barrier Reef lagoon. #NRRP #NaturalResourcesRecoveryProgram #ReefCatchments #GreatBarrierReef

Leaky brash dams are simple, cost-effective and eco-friendly structures made from brash, branches and logs, often locally sourced on-site. They work by slowing down the water flow in watercourses during periods of heavy downpours, helping to prevent downstream flooding, reduce erosion, and create valuable wetland habitats. By holding back water, these natural barriers improve groundwater levels and support biodiversity, making them a great tool for sustainable water management! These before and after photos show how a leaky brash dam installed by Westcountry Rivers Trust helped re-flood a wet woodland, transforming it into a thriving wetland. This change enhances habitats and boosts water storage. #FloodPrevention #WetlandRestoration #SustainableWaterManagement

You can easily recycle water at home and help your plants thrive. Here’s how: ✅ Reuse cooking water after it cools to water your plants. ✅ Pour leftover drinking water into your plants instead of wasting it. ✅ Rinse fruits and veggies in a bowl, then use that water for your plants. These small changes can make all the difference in water conservation. #ontoz #purewater #Water

It’s interesting to know how water quality is in the area where I live.
💧 The #GreatUKWaterBlitz is here! This weekend, from 7-10 June, over 2️⃣ 5️⃣ 0️⃣ 0️⃣ individuals across the UK, as well as our existing FreshWater Watch groups, will go out and measure their local water quality. With this data, we can create a snapshot of the water health across the country and take action to restore our rivers and freshwater systems. 📋 Although we have now closed sign-ups for the June WaterBlitz, you can already sign up to our next WaterBlitz in September ➡ https://lnkd.in/e5GVxhpE #CitzienScience #WaterTesting #WaterPollution #RiverPollution #EndSewagePollution #SaveOurRivers #WaterQuality

Backyard Conservation: Small changes in lawn care, landscaping, and soil health management practices can lead to local water quality improvements. Converting lawn areas to native trees, shrubs, rain gardens, wildflowers or prairie grasses improves soil health, increases rainwater infiltration and reduces pollution from lawn runoff. Rain Barrels improve water quality by reducing stormwater runoff and, therefore, reducing the delivery of pollutants to the storm sewer system.
