We can’t emphasize how important it is to document students’ thinking and support collaborative explorations enough… Here’s a snapshot from one of our “drawing discussions” in action. Some notable details: ✏️ Practicing proper grip with homemade #cARTieCrayons. 🅰️ Engaging in letter recognition. 😍 Studying different feelings and emotions. 👥 Working and playing side-by-side. ☺️ Getting comfortable exercising critical and creative thinking in an art museum environment. 📣”Oh, I don’t have to take my children to the museum; they've already been with the school." Here are 3 reasons why you should go back: 1. Personalized Experience: Schools operate on tight schedules and must follow a set curriculum. By taking your child, you can tailor the visit to their specific interests. Want to spend more time at the polar bear exhibit? No problem! 🐻❄️ 2. Quality Bonding Time: Visiting the museum with your child allows for quality time together. You can explore at your own pace.🤝 3.New Discoveries: Museums regularly update their exhibits. Your child likely didn't see everything on their first visit, and new displays can provide fresh learning opportunities. 🔍 Bonus: See the list of free days for museums below! 📅 Let’s combat summer learning loss. 💎Studies show that children who visit museums with their families tend to perform better academically. Learning never stops—embrace lifelong learning! 📚✨🦋💎 #BillionaireBookBabeArt #BillionaireBookBabe #SummerLearning #MuseumMagic #FamilyFun #LifelongLearning #ExploreTogether #SmartParents #EducationMatters

This weekend, I had the opportunity to attend a talk about Neurodiversity in Art at Southampton City Art Gallery. Presented by Verity Babbs, this talk was a self-described “soup” of exploration through historical and contemporary neurodivergent artists, and consideration of the challenges and advantages of navigating the often neurotypical expectations of the professional art world. As an art and design educator, I’m concerned about the learner experience and journey - often working with FE and HE students (who may or may not be neurodivergent) whose previous educational experience has impacted their self-confidence and mental health to such an extent that it becomes a huge barrier to their creative practice. This point was raised and discussed at Saturday’s talk and only reinforced what I already believe to be true. Our education system is in urgent need of review and innovation. Not just for the benefit of neurodiverse learners, but for all. What do you think? How can we approach an educational system shake-up to complement, rather than fight with, the increasingly diverse needs of learners?

If childhood is described as "life in movement" (Kohan, 2005, p. 253), and we as teachers strive to create more opportunities for children to take a leading role—recognizing them as active creators of culture—how can we better understand their perspectives, temporalities, and engagement in play fighting within the daily experiences of early childhood education? Please take a look at this article about my thesis and discover more about the children’s voices. https://lnkd.in/ePTT5tiN

If you aren't sure what professional learning event to attend this fall consider this your official sign to register for the 2024 Bright Starts International Conference in UCL East in Stratford, London (or online)! This event includes speakers from around the world on a wide range of topics in early learning. This years conference is organized into the following streams for participants. The New Voices of Children Pedagogy Authentic Assessment in ECE & Autism & Children 0 - 8 years You can count on seeing my familiar face in The New Voices of Children's Pedagogy stream if exploring the relationship between creative expression, emotional regulation, routines and learning portfolios is your thing! It is going to be an inspiring event with a little something for early learning professional - you can count on that! & if the event doesn't suit you this fall, I encourage you to explore the incredible online virtual exhibit "2024 Voices of Children Gallery" offered on the conference website where children's creative art and notes have been gathered from around the world. The online gallery offers valuable insight into global perspectives of children, what their wonderings are, what is important to them, what exists in their world and so much more. Over 1000 children contributed from 7 countries - it is well worth the time to look at! 👆 This would also be a great teaching tool for looking at pedagogical documentation & creative arts through the voice of the child as well as nurturing intercultural development & belonging among adult learners for my fellow ECE Faculty folks! 👀 Virtual field trip or search & find activity - I think so! Check it out for yourself here! - https://lnkd.in/e8M9U_J5 -- Is there an art piece that stood out to you in a particular way? 💬 For me, it's the picture featured from Japan that illustrates a child's experience creating a banner with their family to put up in their community on a national holiday set to celebrate children's healthy development. I wonder how a national holiday to celebrate children in Canada would influence the early learning landscape here? Let me know your favourite art piece in the comments! 💫 Link to conference - https://lnkd.in/eBnpMTmz Link to my session - https://lnkd.in/efGX2Hhh Link to virtual art exhibit - https://lnkd.in/e8M9U_J5

In 8th grade, my physical science teacher, Mr. Stark, said we were going to have to invent something that would solve a problem. That was going to be our science projects that year. At the time, I was the only physically disabled student in a school with no elevator. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has just been passed 11 months prior and was not being implemented yet. Accessibility and lack of it has always been something I was aware of. I knew I wanted to invent a wheelchair that went up stairs and I did. That project earned me 10 As. 33 years later, incorporating the subject of accessibility and access needs into my first book was more important than ever. Getting to incorporate The Go Anywhere Wheelchair was also important and very special. We are exactly 2 months away from launch date. So hard to believe. You can pre-order Adventurous Adeline at this link or anywhere books are sold and be sure you pick up a few extra copies for your local schools and libraries: https://lnkd.in/d_2wupr6 [Video description: A picture of a 13 year old Mary, Lebanese-born girl with natural curly dark hair and light brown skin. You’re 13 years old, in 8th grade, and you win an award for your science project… The screen fades and a certificate with Mary’s name on it for The Go Anywhere Wheelchair appears. The white text reads: 33 years later you write a book that includes your 8th grade science project The screen fades again and the cover of Adventurous Adeline is shown then text in the book showing the story taking about The Go Anywhere Wheelchair.
