PhD applications are open for a competitively funded PhD by the Yorkshire Bioscience Doctoral training partnership titled 'Exploring enzyme-mediated degradation of plant biomass by in situ imaging for biosecurity'. Deadline is the 6th January. The project involves mass spectrometry imaging of plant matter degraded by LPMO enzymes. 🔬 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐆𝐥𝐲𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐝 🔬 A pioneering study published in 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 reveals how glycerol prevents ice formation at ultra-low temperatures, offering new insights into #cryopreservation. Led by researchers from Stockholm University and global collaborators, the study shows that glycerol stabilizes water by disrupting its hydrogen bond network, preventing ice crystal formation and protecting cells from damage. 💧 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: ✔️ Glycerol alters water's behavior, suppressing density fluctuations. ✔️It shifts the "Widom line" to colder temperatures, further preventing ice formation. Great News🎉Researchers from the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute are partners in a research team that will receive a 40 million euros NWO Summit grant for research at the interface of chemistry and biology. The multidiciplinary team, led by Delft University of Technology, will investigate whether it is possible to make living cells from lifeless molecules. In doing so, they will use laboratory evolution and artificial intelligence to engineer complex systems for the first time. From the RUG, Prof. Bert Poolman is responsible for one of the five work programs. For its implementation, the RUG will receive approximately 4 million euros for the first five years. Hydrogen Promotes the Growth of Platinum Pyramidal Nanocrystals by Size-Dependent Symmetry Breaking Study of the Growth of Platinum Pyramidal Nanocrystals The growth of platinum pyramidal nanocrystals is studied through synthesis and characterization experiments combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The formation of pyramidal shapes is attributed to specific symmetry breaking caused by hydrogen adsorption on the growing nanocrystals. I am happy to share with you new research in collaboration with Diana Nelli, Valentina Mastronardi, Rosaria Brescia, Pier Paolo Pompa, and Riccardo Ferrando. These results offer new perspectives on the controlled synthesis of platinum nanocrystals, paving the way for advanced applications in catalysis and energy. Full research in the first comment.

#Meet Liliana Hurtado , 👋🏼 Liliana is the first one using a genipin-rich substance extracted from the caruto fruit (Venezuela) as a cross-linker in biopolymer-based materials processed using extrusion. Her work represents an important contribution to reactive extrusion technologies of biomacromolecules, as the commercial genipin is an expensive chemical and has a very high melting point.
