TRISTAN Year 1 Review Meeting Brussels, 5-6 February 2024 What an exciting and intense technical review we had this week in Brussels! #TRISTAN Project coordinators, along with a large delegation of workpackage and task leaders from the most active European semiconductors companies, SMEs and Research & Technology organizations in the skyrocketing RISC-V technology ecosystem, have gathered in the #ChipsJU headquarters of the Flemish capital to meet with a commission of experts led by project officer Dr Georgi Kuzmanov. In less than two days, progress status, challenges and outlook of a large number work-items targeting RISC-V compliant processors, application-specific custom ISA extensions, co-processors cores & interfaces, as well as HW and Verification IPs have been assessed. But TRISTAN is actually much more than RTL. To complement HW development, a number of RISC-V customized SW driver packages, middleware, libraries, OS and development tools (profilers, compilers, linkers, debuggers) are under development. HW and SW development in TRISTAN will be then enabled by the customization of existing and novel EDA solutions targeting architectural explorations of RISC-V based systems, module-level design and verification of IPs and system, as well as HW/SW system-level co-design and co-verification. To complete the picture the status of design and implementation of many "demonstrators" has been reviewed, giving also the opportunity to some partners to showcase a few already working systems built of RISC-V technology. For those interested to the long list of HW & SW IPs under development, we recommend to look into TRISTAN Virtual Repository: https://lnkd.in/efHRUC4J At the end of the two days, other important aspects like project management, sharing of deliverables and technical knowledge, dissemination of the project's achievements and the creation of new collaborations opportunities were also addressed. Overall, together we made a very good impression to the members of the commission, showing our vast technical expertise, innovative proposals and applications spanning over all disciplines of digital HW & SW development. Good coordination and great organization of the review were also reported. The commission also listed down few recommendations and points worth of attention, which will guide us during the coming year till the next yearly project review. On behalf of the whole Project Steering Board, we would like to thank everybody for the high level of engagement, the accurate preparation of all presentations and the invaluable on-site or remote presence and participation to all talks. Let's keep up with the good work and do our best to advertise TRISTAN outcome to the ever-growing RISC-V community.

The infrastructure team at Orb thinks a lot about our production oncall rotation, and how to scale and shape it over time. Here are some core operating principles we've landed on that work well for us so far (of course, any such list will be stage dependent, so take in a high-sodium way): 1/ Try to keep most engineers on-call, avoiding the outcome where a small fraction bear the brunt of instability. This helps build a shared mental model of pain points — calibration on issues is important. 2/ Remove all judgement calls possible at 3am; this requires clear playbooks, links to dashboards as entrypoints for investigation, and alignment on when to escalate (oh -- and train people to bias towards escalation; the natural tendency, especially for newer folks, is to avoid it). 3/ At each weekly handoff, explicitly document what's gotten better and what deserves investment. We also rate each shift (using Asana status updates) between 'on track', 'at risk' to 'off track'. The update should reach the whole engineering team, if not the whole company. 4/ We've gotten a lot of mileage out of a separate #oncall channel with a single thread per investigation. We still try to minimize noise in the alerts/pages channel, but this new venue has become an easier place to rope folks in and ask for help. This channel is also something non-engineers can reasonable track. 5/ As an infra (and in other orgs, SRE, platform, etc.) team, you have to dedicate real roadmap time to investing in oncall improvements in addition to each individual oncall doing so. Some projects just don't get done incrementally. We've done a ton of this — from better instrumentation to observability (whether its metrics or database transactions) to ergonomics (where do alerts go, how do they get deduped, etc.).

🕯️🔜💡 As a Senior Software Engineer, I often contemplate the evolution of technology and its parallels to everyday objects. One analogy that resonates with me is the comparison between a candle and a tubelight. A candle, with its timeless simplicity, has been illuminating our surroundings for centuries. Yet, its evolution is inherently limited by its design—it cannot naturally transform into a tubelight. The tubelight, on the other hand, embodies the continuous innovation and advancement in technology. It harnesses electricity and gas discharge to produce light, offering efficiency, durability, and versatility. This analogy reflects the essence of technological evolution. While the candle has its nostalgic charm, it cannot seamlessly transition into the realm of tubelights due to fundamental differences in their mechanisms. Similarly, in software engineering, our advancements often lead to entirely new innovations rather than mere iterations of existing technologies. Let's embrace the spirit of innovation and continue to push the boundaries of what's possible in our field. Here's to lighting up the future, one line of code at a time! 💻💡 #SoftwareEngineering #Innovation #TechnologyEvolution

Platform engineering vs Developer experience initiative- which to start first? Why not both? Start small or big? Something that I am thinking a lot about in the past few weeks, getting ready for the next quarter. For me both are two different things but can work pretty well together for the engineering organisation. Will try to explain why. 💻 Platform engineering is mostly about technology. 😊 Developer experience is all about people. 💻 Platform engineering enables engineering teams to build high quality products and deliver business value faster. 😊DevEx refers to the overall feelings and perceptions an engineer has while interacting with technology, tooling and processes. YES, platform engineering can improve your overall developer experience, allowing engineers to focus on building applications faster, with less friction. But also platform engineering can ruin it if developers find the platform overly complex and inefficient. And if they’re not using it, what’s the point? 💡 That's why start your developer experience initiative first. Get closer to the engineers and listen to their voices to understand their struggles and frustrations. This will give you the opportunity to answer questions like : Is it worth investing in platform engineering? Maybe not right now? Or where to put my best efforts first and bring value immediately? What are your thoughts, experience and advices on this topic? #platformengineering #developerexperience #engineering #productivity #developerproductivity
