*** 🌟 Imagine a scientist, passionate about their groundbreaking work, but struggling hard to talk about it in public, feeling completely out of their element. You know, they are usually most at home in the lab, surrounded by molecules and systems, and the idea of giving interviews or speaking in public, most of the time, feels daunting. This often leads them to avoid these opportunities, unable to easily and clearly communicate and express the value of their work. 🌟 Recently, I had the honor of training award-winning scientists from PALOP (Portuguese-Speaking African Countries) to better share their scientific projects with non-specialist audiences. 👥 🌍 In this workshop, I worked with five amazing scientists. We focused on creating a 90-second pitch to present their work to diverse audiences—whether it’s children, villagers where they conduct fieldwork, or friends at a dinner party. 🗣️✨ One scientist's journey particularly moved me. He used to shy away from TV appearances or public speaking, often saying, "I'm not good with cameras," or "I'm not comfortable speaking in public." Through our workshop, they learned that all these skills can be developed and perfected. I have to confess that this is what captivates me the most and what I feel is my true mission. It was truly rewarding and heartwarming. ❤️🌟 I’d like to give a heartfelt thanks to Career Chaperone, for hiring this workshop, and special thanks to Pedro Resende and Rita Brás for their incredible support in making this partnership possible. 🙏 Seeing the transformation from hesitation to confidence was truly inspiring. 🎓💙 It's official - I'm a Master of Strategic Communications Management This July, I missed two important events due to a busy work schedule — my graduation party for my master's program at the HSE University (National Research University — Higher School of Economics) and Tomorrowland in Belgium. The second event is optional, but the first was a unique occasion that won't be repeated unless followed by new achievements. I want to express my gratitude for this period in my life; it has shown me what I am capable of and how I can excel in my chosen profession. I will miss my favorite but challenging lectures on the ethics of using data in media, managing strategic communications, crisis management solutions, and positioning in the information space. The master’s work I wrote on crisis management measures for the company I worked for will remain a guiding reference in my future decisions. I truly value this time, the experience, the knowledge, and the global networking opportunities I gained. HSE University, thanks for everything. While I am sad to watch the graduation broadcast online, I understand that what matters most is the knowledge and experience I carry forward. As for Tomorrowland, the main theme this year was "Life," which reminds us of our roots, no matter where we are. I believe this is a great idea to keep in mind as I start new achievements. And hope we finally will meet next year 💙

Many individuals are held back from exploring new opportunities due to the fear of failure and self-doubt. This fear often manifests as questions like "What if I mess up?" or "What if I embarrass myself?" These doubts can be powerful deterrents, especially for someone like me - a reserved, introverted young woman who has always avoided speaking in public. Growing up, I convinced myself that public speaking wasn't my forte, believing it was better suited for others and that my strengths lay in staying out of the spotlight. Even during my senior year in secondary school, when I was assigned to give speeches during morning assemblies, my fear remained unshaken. My university days mirrored this pattern of shyness and reluctance until a fortuitous event changed everything. I was selected to represent my university in a debate competition at a conference organized by the Nigerian Association of Microbiology Students (NAMS) in the Northern Region in 2023. Despite my lingering anxiety, participating in the competition marked a turning point for me. Following the conference, where my team placed third, I was once again chosen to represent my institution, this time in a debate organized by the National Association of Osun State Students (NAOSS) Futminna Chapter, where we emerged victorious. It was during this period that I began to question my fear of public speaking and sought ways to overcome it. Inspired by my newfound determination, I delved into resources like "The Confident Speaker" by Harrison Monarth and Larina Kase, prompting me to ask myself why I was so afraid. With a clearer understanding of my fears, I resolved to improve myself, and gradually, things began to change. I took on roles of increasing responsibility, serving as the Director of Research for my department, and later, contesting for and winning the position of department president. Each success bolstered my confidence and reinforced the idea that mindset and determination are crucial in overcoming obstacles. Today, as I reflect on my journey, I realize that the only thing that truly matters is the willingness to confront one's fears. While the road was challenging, the rewards of overcoming my fear of public speaking have been immense, and I now approach new challenges with renewed confidence and determination.

***State of the Advice Nation only ten days to go*** 💡 We close fieldwork for SOTAN on Friday 22nd November meaning if you work in the advice profession and want to get your voice heard, time is running out to join the 300 of your peers who have taken part so far. ⌚ The study will take between 10 and 30 minutes of your time depending on your role and there's loads on offer in return. 👶 This year we're looking to add as many people who are newer to the profession into the fieldwork to get their views on the sector based on their experience so far. Do you know anyone who is in their first 5 years in advice, whether that be paraplanning, planning, admin or any other role? We're extremely keen to capture their thoughts and perspectives on the role so far. There's fewer questions for the newbies and they get their own dedicated section too.
