Is pursuing a master’s degree in communications worth it? Everyone’s journey is different hence you will get many views on whether or not to pursue a master’s in communication. It is important to pursue further studies because that step means something to you, not because someone says you should. Master’s studies require 110% commitment from you as an individual, and if your reasons for pursuing the studies are valuable to you, you will know where you need to draw inspiration from when you are demotivated because that will probably happen at some point during your master’s journey. I completed my master’s in Strategic Communication at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and it was a demanding and fulfilling journey. Some of the things I appreciated about the UJ Strategic Communications Department is that I had an amazing supervisor Karabo Sitto-Kaunda who made the master's journey lighter. In our first class we were asked about our reasons for pursuing a master’s degree, for some people it was for acquiring new knowledge, and for others meeting a personal goal that a person had set, for some like me, it was for career growth. When I registered for my master’s, I had 6 years of experience in the communications industry, and I had completed my honours degree 8 years ago. I was starting to feel redundant in my role as I had been doing it for 4years and I was no longer growing. Going back to school after an 8-year break was not easy but it was a strategic move, my worldview shifted, my mind was challenged, and I learned new knowledge from the curriculum and from peers in my class. I studied coursework Master’s in Strategic Communication over 2 years, the first year entailed coursework with compulsory classes, and the second year entailed completing a dissertation. When I completed my studies, I felt empowered and knowledgeable, not that I was not before, but it gave me the confidence boost that I needed, Afterall I am now a MASTER in strategic communication. Completing my master’s gave me the courage to pursue higher roles, I interviewed better because I knew my capabilities and expertise. So, I would say, yes, a master’s degree in communications was worth it for me. I landed a new job, and I am more confident in my expertise because I do not just have the experience, I also have the qualifications to back me up.

Developing crisis management strategies 4. Mentoring future PR professionals My ultimate goal is to become a respected PR leader, driving ethical and effective communication practices in organizations. Conclusion: My first year at UJ has been a transformative experience, laying the groundwork for a successful PR career. I'm eager to continue learning, growing, and contributing to the field. No Such Thing as a 'Useless' Qualification As a soon-to-be PR graduate, I 've often heard people say that Public Relations qualification is useless or ' What can you do with a Public Relations Qualification?' I have heard it from people close to me and even those who are already in their remote of work. Truly speaking, in my first year, I wanted to change to a different qualification. Its was unfortunate that people underestimate Public Relations, to a point of calling it useless, and even more unfortunate to me since I enrolled in it 😥. I remember telling my previous high school teacher that I am studying Bachelor of Commerce in Law 😅. She was so happy for me, very happy that she wanted to share the news with her students. I am now in my final year of studying, and all Ican say is that my mindset have changed. I realised how amazing Public Relation is, and how fortunate i was to have been enrolled and accepted in it. If i was asked to share what kind a of qualification I was doing, I will proudly share that ' I am a Public Relation Student' . In this 21st Century , where anyone can get their big break, achieve their dreams and even get their dream job through mass media. I can safely go back to my high school teacher and come to clean about my qualification. I have the confidence to even share how I lied to her in the first place. I have realized that every qualification has value, and every field is important. Its time we break down the stigma surrounding " less traditional" qualifications and recognizing the diverse strength they bring. Each an every qualification, helps us develops unique skills and perspective that can be applied in various ways. PR is about building relationships, managing reputation, and communicating effectively. Its a Vital function in every organization. As a media communication student, I know there are so many branches of the industry to explore such as journalism, broadcasting, marketing coordinator and so on. But what have been my ultimate passion and goal is to be in the public relations industry. Since I was a little girl, I have been an introverted person. Was into Biology and languages that naturally made quiet room as the most preferred space to be in. Which means, less interaction with people. I was even called as an arrogant and hard-to-approach girl back then. But as time goes by, I feel like I want to get out of that comfort zone of mine. I wish to go out there, interact more, lead the team and present myself better in front of people. Simply said, wanting to become a better version of myself. Thus, I decided to take on challenges. I started to involve myself in many co-curricular and volunteering activities, meet new people at every program and grab any available opportunities to present myself to the audience. I got so much better, but still I have a lot of room for improvements. As a freshman, getting the invitation to be part of a mega event like this, The International Public Relations Convention is definitely a dream comes true. I got so many insights from the PR professionals from different countries there, allowing me to have a better vision as a soon to be PR professional especially in keeping myself up-to-date with the advancement of technology to incorporate in my work. I know this is just the start of my journey as a future PR professional. I believe in persistence efforts and eagerness to learn as among the prime keys to mold myself into the figure I have been dreaming of to be, so really anticipating for more discoveries to come!

I was privileged to assist a group of students from the University of Media, Arts and Communications-IJ with their group assignment sometime last year. I received a message from the group lead indicating that they had passed their coursework and were grateful for my help. As part of the requirements, I was to share an inspirational message with Public Relations students. Looking back, I’m glad I was able to help them, and I hope this letter inspires someone out there, not only students but professionals. Dear PR Student, Congratulations on your chosen field! It is a fascinating profession with many opportunities, but you must apply yourself. Commit to constant learning and volunteering because that is the only way to stay up-to-date with the latest communication trends. As you study and navigate this field, remember that you are the architects of perception, truth storytellers, and reputation guardians. As you embark on this journey, stay curious, be adaptable, and never compromise on your ethical standards. As storytellers, don’t forget to tell your own story- that is, manage your brand because nobody will tell your story better than you. How do universities promote their public relations programmes online? And what does this say about how universities see their PR offering? That's what Ileana Zeler, Ph.D. and I set to find out with an analysis of UK university online prospectus content. The results are published in Journal of Communication Management (paywall) and we're delighted to see our analysis in print. https://lnkd.in/erpinm6Z As we know, public relations is usually offered as a degree alongside subjects such as marketing, journalism and advertising. So what did we find out?: 📖 Subjects such as marketing, journalism and advertising are foregrounded in course descriptions especially when discussing teaching and potential career paths. 🗞️ Presentation of programmes is sometimes “headline grabbing” and can position public relations as a tactical subject, emphasising promotion and practical skills. 👩🎓 Public relations is a difficult subject to explain within the confines of a university prospectus and consequently is frequently presented as a promotional practice with little connection to management, leadership or academic research. 🎉 It is often presented as a 'fun' occupation and frequently feminised. As I know from experience (and we discuss this in the article) course information that appears online is not always supplied by the course team (who may or may not be public relations specialists). Prospectus copy is driven by university positioning of particular types of courses, as well as market demands, so may not reflect what is actually taught on the course. The marketisation of HE can result in course descriptions being a selling tool and while they are not inaccurate do not express the breadth of the degree programme.

The CIPR Diploma isn’t just a credential; it’s a transformative experience. However, as rewarding as this journey is, it’s also challenging. Balancing coursework with professional responsibilities is demanding, and I’m reaching out to my network for support. People often ask how I ended up in radio broadcasting with a degree in Political Science, especially here in the North, where it is generally assumed that the industry belongs to Mass Communication graduates. It is a belief I have encountered many times. But interestingly, there are not many Mass Communication graduates truly ready to go into this industry, leaving those of us from other fields to fill the roles, and, surprisingly, to sometimes even guide and train them. My journey started with a significant sacrifice: I volunteered and interned for over a year without any pay. I took this step purely out of commitment and the belief that, in time, the experience would be worth it. That decision led me from unpaid intern to an active role within the radio station, and eventually, I became a Public Affairs Analyst, a position that aligns closely with my background in Political Science. Today, my role covers a range of responsibilities. I handle voicing, scriptwriting, and editing, along with audio editing, program production, and anchoring various shows. Additionally, I provide sports reports, cover public and political affairs, and carry out public affairs analysis. Beyond these broadcasting responsibilities, I have taken on an administrative assistance role, which has been a valuable way to build experience and expand my skill set in another professional area. One of the most rewarding parts of my journey has been the opportunity to train Corps Members, trainees, and interns, many of whom hold degrees in Mass Communication. Being able to coach and support them has been a fulfilling experience and has underscored my own growth within the industry. While I may not plan to make broadcasting a lifelong career, the journey so far has proven invaluable. I am learning, gaining versatility, and enjoying the chance to contribute meaningfully to an industry that, at first glance, seemed outside my field.
