Geriatricians are experts in seeing the big picture when it comes to aging – someone who is well-versed in older adults’ physical, emotional and social care needs that change over time. Someone who has experience in the normal changes our bodies go through as we grow older, and who knows what to look for and how to both prevent and address health issues. But while adults 65+ use more healthcare than any other age group, there are just 7,300 board-certified geriatricians in the United States – fewer than 1 percent of all physicians. This is a pretty scary statistic when you consider that the population of older adults is projected to grow by 40%+ over the next ten years! Thank you to Carly Stern and the The Washington Post for helping to shine a bright light on such a vitally important topic. Your insightful article reinforces the need for providing age-friendly healthcare and validates our mission to provide a better healthcare and aging experience for older adults. What can a rehab therapist teach students in a Masters of Public Health program about maternal care? On October 9th, an audience at the University of New Mexico will learn about acute care therapists who are taking a public health approach to maternal care across 59 hospitals in the United States. These therapists are challenging disparities in rehab and are offering OT and PT to patients after unplanned c-section - similar to populations after other emergent or elective surgeries which have a higher association with hemorrhage, infection, and hypertensive disorders. Their public health aim is to reduce maternal morbidity related to physical and mental health concerns in populations who are not typically offered a rehab care plan in the hospital after birth. Their maternal rehab approach: screen mental and physical function in the setting of social determinants of health after any birth experience before mothers from diverse backgrounds leave the healthcare system. It’s the most effective public health approach to evidence-based care and best practice in maternal rehab that we have seen in women’s healthcare. To join live, access the lecture here: Zoom Details: https://lnkd.in/gKkd_nrU Meeting ID: 942 3775 9160 Note: The University of New Mexico owns the rights to the recording. Paediatric and adolescent health is a theme for #ISCoS2024. Prof Lawrence Vogel explains the difference in caring for SCI in children and adolescents, "Compared to adult-onset SCI, youth with SCI have a longer lifespan during which they may sustain secondary health conditions and subsequently have to live with these secondary health conditions for a longer time. In general, youth with SCI are cared for by an interdisciplinary team with a family-centred approach, so a major component in caring for youth with SCI is the transition process to adulthood that must encompass the different healthcare delivery systems for adults with SCI. Youth with SCI are not small adults but rather a unique population that requires precise and compassionate care by well-educated and trained health care providers." You still have time to submit your late-breaking research for ISCoS 2024. Submit your abstract here: https://lnkd.in/ef5Jp-Ax #SpinalCordInjury #AbstractSubmissions #LateBreaking
