What makes poor leadership spiral into something that can’t be stopped? This is the question asked by a late-April episode of the Harvard Business Review’s Ideacast, which is the best thing I listened to over the Fourth of July holiday break. (Thanks Emily Rand for turning me on to this podcast!) The episode has Barbara Kellerman on to discuss how bad leadership can fester and get much worse. What I enjoyed about this episode is that it asked some great questions. Bad and unethical leadership is a progression that doesn’t happen overnight. Followers enable. The longer poor leadership goes on, the more difficult it becomes to stop. In fact, one’s definition of a bad leader can be somebody else’s good leader. Kellerman goes into the phases of recognizing bad leadership, from unrealistically offering the moon and stars down to acquiring uncritical followers to enable leaders and then leaders becoming the antithesis of their initial grounded vision. I’ve spent enough time around teams to where I’ve seen more than my fair share of bad leadership. Yet for as much time is spent on understanding positive and effective leadership techniques, this episode resonates because of how easy it is to not take the time and learn. I don’t think much about why bad and unethical leadership happens in spite of being in some very toxic rooms. Kellerman, while giving several real-life examples, discussing followers going along and not having an idea to stop unethical leadership was a lightbulb moment. She also gives ways to be alert and safely ask managers and leaders about unethical and poor leadership. The entire episode is 20 minutes long, short enough to listen to while cooking or having a little bit of downtime. I can’t recommend it enough. https://lnkd.in/eV6tX7fZ #leadership #ethics #badleaders #podcasts
