🔍 This week MG2lab - Politecnico di Milano presents its paper on stochastic model for unit commitment: We're excited to highlight a paper titled “A novel stochastic model for flexible unit commitment of off-grid microgrids” published in Applied Energy by Elsevier in November 2022. It introduces a novel two-stage stochastic formulation for managing Microgrids (MGs) under demand and Renewable Energy Source (RES) generation uncertainty. Here are the key highlights: 🌟 Innovative Approach: This paper employs scenarios and piecewise affine decision rules to define the recourse problem. These rules are applied to the Unit Commitment of the generators resulting in flexible commitment as generation capacity adapts to the observation of uncertainty. Moreover, decision rules are used to obtain a non-anticipative storage management that is essential to allow for large RES penetration and reliable operation of the microgrid. 💡 Significant Outcomes: 1. In day-ahead optimizations, the solution achieved a service reliability of 99.88% with a 14.3% reduction in fuel consumption compared to deterministic approaches. 2. Rolling-horizon optimizations on a rural MG demonstrated operational solutions only 5% more expensive than those with perfect forecasts, significantly outperforming deterministic approaches. 3. Experimental tests in MG2lab - Politecnico di Milano facility showcased fuel consumption savings of up to 9.6% with large RES yield, highlighting the efficacy of the stochastic model in real-world scenarios. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of integer recourse in managing off-grid MGs economically, even in real operations. Decision rules mapping optimal MG operations through uncertainty sets have proven successful in day-ahead and rolling horizon operations. Furthermore, incorporating non-anticipative constraints in the model formulation enhances service reliability. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to push the boundaries of MG management and renewable energy integration! --- Link to the paper: https://lnkd.in/eX_u-Whn #ResearchHighlight #Microgrids #RenewableEnergy #StochasticModeling #Innovation 🌱🔌

🔔 New Research Paper 🔔 I’m glad to announce the publication of our last research paper in the Applied Energy Journal by Elsevier: “Assessment of energy systems configurations in mixed-use Positive Energy Districts through novel indicators for energy and environmental analysis”. Many thanks to all co-authors: Chiara Martone, Giovanna Pallotta, carlo roselli, Maurizio Sasso. 📃 The research is developed within the “NETPLUS: Neighborhood Energy Transition: towards Positive energy baLance and carbon neUtral diStricts” project NetPlus Prin. 🔑 Key Findings: 📌 Our research focuses on assessing the best configuration of energy systems serving a district located in the industrial area of a city in the South of Italy to achieve the #PositiveEnergyDistrict target. 📌 The district includes various types of end-users, and it is equipped with evacuated tube collectors; photovoltaic plants, wind turbines and an electrolyser for producing green hydrogen. 📌 Various dynamic simulation tools have been adopted to model and simulate the plants serving the district, too, such as TRNSYS 18, HOMER Pro® and MATLAB. 📌 Several scenarios have been outlined varying the size and the typology of renewable-based plants installed, and an energy and environmental analysis have been performed to select the best-proposed configuration. 📌 Two novel indicators have also been introduced to verify the accomplishment of the objectives characterizing Positive Energy Districts: the Positive Balance Check and the Carbon Neutrality Check. ✔ Implications: Our research has significant implications for the development of Positive Energy Districts, and it may guide the selection of the best-performing technological option, thus supporting the energy transition of cities. 🔎 Access the Full Paper: For those interested in the Positive Energy Districts and the potential for cleaner energy solutions, I invite you to read our complete research paper. You can access the paper for free via this link: https://lnkd.in/dAFb2JNe #RenewableEnergy #PositiveEnergyDistricts #EnergySharing #ResearchPaper #EnergyTransition #Sustainability #ScienceForGood

📑 Happy to announce the publication of my literature review #paper, delving into the analysis of multi-system innovations from a #sociotechnical perspective! In the ongoing energy transition, the importance of multi-system innovations is steadily increasing. Vehicle-to-Grid (#v2g) is an example of such a multi-system innovation that anchors between two systems: Electricity and Transport. This paper contributes to our understanding of the analysis of such multi-system innovations. Our findings reveal three crucial aspects to consider in multi-system frameworks: 1. The overarching directionality (or common trajectory) of multiple systems. 2. Explicit examination of the phase of each transitioning system. 3. System configuration analysis, encompassing the value chain and linked sectors. Special gratitude to my co-authors Linda Kamp, Natalia Barbour, Ph.D. and Emile Chappin for their invaluable contributions to this research. Want to learn more? Read our #openaccess paper here. Eager to contribute to the discourse on #multisysteminnovations and looking forward to discussions and feedback! #phd #research #energytransition #sociotechnical #sectorcoupling https://lnkd.in/er25vuks
