Did you know that many ESOL programs aren't designed for people who are illiterate? Many of the students that we serve at For the Nations DC (FTNDC) never had the opportunity to learn to read or write in their first language. In fact, they were systemically denied the opportunity for an education. 🛑 Ironically, the most marginalized people who need English instruction the most can have a hard time getting it--especially if they are a mother with children. At FTNDC, students work through a specialized curriculum that allows them the opportunity to slowly build basic language skills so that they can move to a more traditional class. Learning how to read and write for the first time in a language that's not your first language is hard! And yet, our students show up day after day, determined to learn. This picture is from our lowest-level literacy class. You might see a simple sketch with words. I see dignity and independence for the courageous women who are seizing the opportunity they deserve.

Two changes to the education system announced in PM Lawrence Wong's first National Day Rally speech: 💡 Revamp of the Gifted Education Programme (GEP) The GEP, which catered to top-performing students, will be replaced with high-ability programmes in all primary schools. This allows students to stay in their current schools while accessing advanced learning opportunities tailored to their strengths. 💬Boosting Bilingualism To address declining mother tongue skills, more students will be allowed to study Higher Mother Tongue in secondary school.
