Important considerations…
https://lnkd.in/grfEV_i7 Research shows that service slacking has the greatest negative impact on women faculty members and faculty of color: They do more, get rewarded less and have other opportunities limited because of those commitments.

With the issue of censorship raised in last week's vice presidential debate, and Banned Books Week just one week prior, we're looking at the evidence on impacts of book censorship in schools and libraries across the U.S. In 2023, the American Library Association recorded an unprecedented 4,240 titles facing censorship—many centered on topics of gender, the LGBTQIA+ community, and race or racism. Evidence suggests that representation in educational materials significantly impacts the future careers and aspirations of marginalized and underrepresented communities, including women and girls. Research from our Gender Action Portal shows that female students perform better in science when textbooks include counter-stereotypic images of women scientists. By showcasing diverse role models in books, we can inspire girls to pursue careers dominated by men, such as STEM fields, and close the gender gap in performance. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e2suBKhQ

💡 🧠 As a mental health and workplace well-being specialist, I find Sara E. Brownell's research on concealable stigmatized identities (CSIs) among science faculty members particularly illuminating. 👉 While efforts to improve representation in STEM have often focused on visible diversity factors, such as gender and race, Brownell's exploration of less-obvious characteristics like anxiety, depression, and being a first-generation college student sheds light on a crucial aspect of inclusivity. 👉 The findings underscore the prevalence of CSIs among both faculty and students, highlighting the potential for shared experiences within the classroom. However, the decision to disclose such identities remains deeply personal, influenced by factors like privilege, status, and perceived risks. 👉 As Brownell emphasizes, creating a culture where faculty members feel empowered to share their identities can significantly benefit students, especially those who may find solace and support in knowing that their instructors have navigated similar challenges. ✅ In my work, I've seen firsthand the impact of inclusive practices on workplace well-being. Encouraging faculty members to share their experiences can foster empathy, reduce stigma, and create a sense of belonging for students grappling with their own CSIs. ✅ Promoting inclusivity, flexibility, and community engagement within academia not only enriches the learning experience but also nurtures the holistic well-being of students and faculty alike.
A new study suggests that revealing certain characteristics professors sometimes hide (like having depression, being LGBTQ+, or having grown up low-income) could benefit their students. However many professors worry that revealing these stigmatized identities is risky — especially for professors who lack privilege or status.

“It’s radical policy had spectacular results. In five years, the percentage of newly hired female academic staff grew from 30% to 50%. The number of female permanent academic staff increased from 22% to 29%. An evaluation also showed that employees had started to attach more importance to diversity. It was clear that having fair representation did not make the sky fall in.” 💡Desperate times call for radical measures? #genderbalance #genderequality #genderparity #womensrights https://lnkd.in/efq5ge9z

Service slacking! An important conversation as institutions of higher education aim to regain their footing alongside significant post-COVID discipline specific workforce shortages. “Among many other tasks, advising, mentoring, committee service, faculty and student recruiting, and showing up at events sit at the core of university life and student success. Yet they are not treated as such in institutional reward systems like tenure, promotion, merit raises and reassigned time.” #workforcedevelopment #economicdevelopment #equity #highereducation #workplacewellbeing
