I spent the last couple days attending Calgary Arts Development ‘s free, Living a Creative Life Congress. These are some of the things I enjoyed about it: -Free dinner, lunch, drinks and snacks. -The venue, Calgary Public Library is such a beautiful building. -Meeting friendly, art loving people. -Seeing friends and acquaintances from Calgary’s art sector. -Chris Gamble’s clown performance. -The breakout session where we discussed how artists can be agents for social change. -The effort to be inclusive. -Discovered a couple interesting arts organizations. This CADA run initiative was not a “how to” seminar and it wasn’t a gathering to address the issues artists face. What it seemed to be, is a place to celebrate being creative. Whether you’re a hobbyist, a professional artist, a “creative” or an arts administrator. CADA is a government funded organization and so they must try and be all inclusive. They are succeeding it that category. If you consider yourself creative, or work for an organization that focuses on creatives, then there is space for you. And for better or for worse, that’s how it should be. Everyone seems to agree that art is a vital part of any civil society. I would suggest we establish another congress to address the issue of “How to help artists survive as artists”. #lclyyc #lifeasanartist #yycarts #focusedonmusic #yycmusic #yycwriters #businessandart #artistvscreative #art4artsake

Mexico is a country that was able to develop a very well-developed and modern culture 1,000 years before its conquest by the Europeans, in which both the visual and performing arts played a major role. The country's theater structure, which we examined in the seminar, is characterized above all by a strong concentration of institutions in the capital, Mexico City. The National Theater is also located there. Another 730 theaters, about 750 independent companies and artists, and about 660 theater and music festivals are spread across the entire country, but unlike in Germany, they do not receive 80% of their costs as state subsidies, but rather play for income. Living and working conditions of theater artists and musicians are often very precarious. This also applies to the 22 classical orchestras that hope to receive income from tours and guest performances. (thank you @Alba Cecilia Rivera for the graphic) Today, one has to think of Mexico as a country in which older and more recent history exist alongside a present that is characterized by economic problems and the highest rate of femicides in the world. It is a terrible development. Amnesty International writes: "Gender-based violence and femicide as its extreme expression are commonplace in Mexico. According to official figures, between 2018 and 2020, over 11,200 women and girls were killed nationwide - an average of more than ten women per day. Over 23,500 women are officially missing. During the same period, the authorities recorded 151,000 sexual crimes, including around 38,000 rapes, and 610,000 cases of domestic violence, most of which were directed against women and girls. In 2020 alone, over nine million women and girls experienced digital violence, for example in the form of hate comments, insults or surveillance. Those affected experience violence not only in their private lives from family members or acquaintances, but often also from members of organized crime and from members of the police, military and Guardia Nacional." Theater in Mexico also serves to denounce these femicides and to educate girls and young women. The southern neighboring countries of Honduras and El Salvador are also severely affected, so that the women's only option is often to emigrate.

We need more of this kind of thinking and action in the arts sector. The more collaborative our funded arts infrastructure and services are the greater the outcomes. Why does it happen so rarely?

One of the various projects Creative Waikato has worked on in the past couple of years is a Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage funded innovation project we called “Whiria Te Tāngata”. This was a multi-community artist-in-residence programme with 10 artists working throughout the Waikato Region. Tonight we had an initial screening of a feature length documentary film made about this project by filmmaker Dan Inglis. It was a great way to celebrate the impact of this programme. There was also an interview about it with Mark Amery on RNZ for Culture 101. https://lnkd.in/gdz_wNpH

Arts companies and individual artists in Australia are supported by government arts agencies, philanthropists, industry bodies, private donors and patrons. However, it is frequently overlooked that a major source of support for the arts in this country comes from artists themselves. David Throsby & Katya Petetskaya from Macquarie University have published new research into the working lives of artists that shows how, through lower take-home pay and volunteer hours for their community, Australia's artists are subsidising our arts industry. "The incomes earned by professional artists are perennially low," they write. "Our new research, funded by Creative Australia and published today, shows in the 2021–22 financial year, artists’ income from creative work averaged only A$23,200. Even when other sources of income are added – such as from teaching or working outside the arts – the average gross income of Australian artists was still only $54,500 in the year." #thearts #artsjobs https://lnkd.in/gTpChuGC

It is this simple. Creativity is at the heart of innovation. If you want to see innovation - social, economic, community, well-being - you have to invest in it and demonstrate commitment and desire and belief. Reducing support for #culture, #artseducation or just 'saying' you 'support it' but not actually doing so fiscally is literally stupid, like saying you support eating but not contributing to buying or growing the food. Places that are culturally successful are always successful in all the other ways too. Creativity is not something you invest in later (as if it is something disconnected or a luxury in a society), it is something that you prioritise from the start and consistently continue to do so if you want to see innovation, wellbeing and success. Ireland, well done, the transformation is great to see.

Very often the most interesting things happen in smaller places away from the obvious centres. Ireland really is leading the way in evaluating and acting on how it can support the arts ecosystem and - crucially crucially - independent artists. Because the other brilliant example is their basic income pilot for 2.000artists. #lead #change #artists #wholesystem #artmatters

Join Stone-Olafson, the Rozsa Foundation, and invited panelists to discuss the results of the 2nd wave of research on arts audiences in AB. Alberta continues to be at a crossroads brought by a pandemic that has changed public life and reshaped our economy. This is especially true in the Arts & Culture sector which continues to experience a decline in engagement with events and activities. This work was developed for this sector exclusively. It is designed to provide specific, relevant and reliable facts to support the leaders in the arts & culture sector as they build relevance and grow attendance. Key topic areas from Wave 2: -Exploring arts engagement and general perceptions -Understand audiences’ preferences for content, programming, and ticket purchasing -Understanding opportunities for increasing support and engagement This work is designed to be shared. The ultimate goal is to build on collaboration by sharing resources that can drive smart and focused engagement strategies. All are welcome. If we are serious about supporting diverse voices in art so that it can mirror the diverse people that we are then supporting this is a good start. A few people I know who are in this or in the control group have dreamt bigger, have begun fantastic new films, painting series, scripts for stage and film as a direct result of not having to worry about where the money for a new pair of kids shoes is coming from (one of the poverty measures included in the survey which discovered 60% of recipients had felt previously). But this is a pilot and doesn’t have any guarantee of continuing unless there is widespread support. Please consider signing - it’s one of the few ways to guarantee funding will go directly to the people creating the work.
Ireland’s Basic Income for the Arts pilot has provided vital support for artists, giving them the financial stability to create without fear of economic insecurity. But this initiative, launched by Minister Catherine Martin, is still a pilot, and it’s time to ensure it continues. A petition to retain, extend, and expand this scheme is just shy of 10,000 signatures. Let’s help push it over the line and support the future of the arts in Ireland. Sign and share below! https://lnkd.in/ggDvDHKi #SupportTheArts #BasicIncomeForTheArts #IrishArts #CreativeIreland #Petition
