Yesterday the govt launched a new #FoodSecurity index at its #FarmToFork summit and declared the U.K. broadly *food secure* Two (among many) issues - 1. No consideration of food ACCESS, a critical dimension of food security 💷 2. No consideration of the whole population - INFANT food security not addressed 👶🏽 The Food Foundation have showed that households with children under 4 have the highest levels of food insecurity (27.3% in Jan 23) 👶🏼👧🏽🧒🏼 Poor diets in the early years have lifelong negative implications for health & development 🤧 In particular infants 👶🏼👶🏽👶🏻under 6 months are reliant on breastmilk and/or infant formula BUT 👉#breastfeeding protection & support are inadequate 🤱🏻 👉infant formula is hugely expensive & supply is highly concentrated & imported 👨🏽🍼 There are HUGE GLARING nutritional vulnerabilities for babies which the Govt need to do more to address 1. Incorporate #breastfeeding & infant formula supply in to food security assessment & emergency preparedness 2. Improve protections & support for #breastfeeding 3. Fascinating discussion stemming from this post, about food, meals, choice, quality in #AgedCare I think it’s important to focus on the plates where residents have little or no speech (need support to choose or complain), need mealtime assistance (support to eat), and need IDDSI level 4 or 5 (puréed or minced & moist) foods. Those are the groups I am looking for in the show .

Food - Aged Care - Maggie Beer Disappointing to see the negative portrayal of aged care by Maggie Beer & Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and Anika Wells Sorry this was a disappointing program and undersells some of the good work the Maggie Beer Foundation does The program lacked science and failed to acknowledge the impact that chronic illness and a lifetime of poor eating & lifestyle choices has on older people’s nutritional status - all long before they come to residential aged care Sadly the program failed to acknowledge the great food and dining environment in many of aged care homes. Aged care has a lot to be proud of! Yes some need to improve - however let’s acknowledge the good! This is a lunch I recently had in an aged care home - yes a home I am a director of - and yes it was the same meal served to the residents - and yes it was as good as it looked !

At a time when there is real concern about the health of our future generation, we believe that there needs to be real and effective change so that children can get the very best start in life and develop lifelong healthy habits when it comes to nutrition. To support our mission, we commissioned a OnePoll survey of 500 parents with pre-school aged children, and discovered that: 1. Nearly 70% of parents were unaware there are no Government-backed regulations for food content in early years settings. 2. Almost 50% of these parents heavily relied on nurseries to feed their children. 3. Almost 90% of parents agreed that the Government should do more to ensure children at nurseries are eating nutritious food.
