At the beginning of December, at the invitation of the European Union, our Project Manager, Raiana Schirmer Soares (Rai), together with Viola Csordas, Security Sector Reform Advisor at the DCAF - Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance, took part in a visit to Rio Grande do Sul to assess the role of security sector actors in adapting to climate change, with a focus on the response to the floods that devastated the region between April and May 2024. The aim was to deepen our understanding of the security and risk management challenges faced during and after the crisis, identifying lessons that could strengthen the state's resilience in the face of extreme climate events. Our mission included key dialogues with institutions and experts, including: ✅ Porto Alegre State and Municipal Civil Defense; ✅ Firefighters; ✅ Brazilian Army; ✅ RS Department of the Environment and Infrastructure; ✅ Porto Alegre Public Safety Department; ✅ Public Prosecutor's Office; ✅ Community in the Humaitá neighborhood, directly affected by the floods; ✅ Architect Andre Huyer (Porto Alegre Municipal Council for Historical and Cultural Heritage); ✅ Professor Rualdo Menegat; ✅ Thiago Knipling, from Veleiros do Sul, who led rescues of victims; ✅ Centro Humanitário de Acolhimento Vida, which shelters homeless people; ✅ Responsive Cities Institute. These meetings brought valuable insights into how to integrate public security, humanitarian response and infrastructure efforts to mitigate climate risks and protect vulnerable communities. We remain committed to turning these findings into strategies and actions that strengthen climate resilience and adaptation in Brazil. We thank all the partners and interlocutors who have shared their experiences and knowledge throughout this journey. #CBC #Centrobrasilnoclima #meioambiente #sustentabilidade #mudançasclimáticas #biodiversidade #justiçaclimática #governançaclimática #financiamentoclimático #transiçãoenergética #educaçãoclimática #ClimateRealityProjectBrasil #ConsórcioBrasilVerde #CentrodeOperaçõesRS #DCAF #POA #PortoAlegre #enchentes #UniãoEuropeia

Excited to share insights on navigating the complex waters of island governance! Islands, with their unique challenges and opportunities, require tailored approaches to governance. In our latest article, "Navigating in Turbulent Seas: Balancing Stability and Flexible Adaptation in Island Governance," we delve into the strategies for achieving stability while fostering flexible adaptation in island governance. From infrastructure provision to climate change adaptation, island communities grapple with multifaceted issues. Our research highlights the importance of striking a balance between stability and adaptability to address these challenges effectively. While governance models for small islands vary, our study identifies two overarching frameworks that offer valuable insights into effective island governance. Join the conversation on how we can chart a course towards resilient and sustainable island futures! The 9th Our Ocean Conference (Our Ocean Greece) closes today. The Conference comes at a crucial time as evidence mounts of the declining health of the ocean, and momentum gathers towards reverting this trend in the build up to the 2025 UN Ocean Conference. SIWI actively participated in the discussions, bringing expertise to accelerating #SourceToSea action and strengthening collaborations between the #freshwater and #marine communities. https://lnkd.in/di26EiRX

#Risk can be calculated as follows: hazard x vulnerability. Frequently, we think we have control over a #hazard. However, when a persistent concern arises from increasing #desertification, risks are multiplied by 100 because of vulnerabilities! In this context, new governance models can emerge that impede rather than advance #growth. As sea levels continue to rise in the near and long term, cohesive sea level rise adaptation along the Bay shoreline becomes more important than ever. The San Francisco Bay Conservation & Development Commission (BCDC) adopted a Regional Shoreline Adaptation Plan (RSAP) to guide and coordinate the preparations of the Bay Area’s local governments and communities for rising sea levels. What will the RSAP do? 🌊 Establish a regional vision for successful sea level rise adaptation. 🌊 Guide local governments as they prepare local adaptation plans. 🌊 Reduce flood risk by aligning local and regional priorities. 🌊Coordinate adaptation projects across multiple jurisdictions. 🌊Standardize and simplify adaptation methods and data. 🌊Drive regionally coordinated project implementation. 🌊 Uphold environmental justice by requiring local plans to incorporate equity. This would NEVER happen under Pierre Poilievre. All he does is look for animals to extinct so he can make money from destroying their habitat-for example the Boreal Caribou in Quebec. If given power he will extinct them for temporary jobs. It is time to fight back in some meaningful way that will inspire a coalition with Greens Liberal and NDP as we share the same concerns about the environment, human rights and real FREEDOMS. women's right to choose, Inclusion, and Equity! ect. ect. If these leaders will not unite then we should be voting strategically and vote LIBERAL to keep Conservatives out of power. You cannot even call them Progressive Conservatives anymore-they seem to have taken out the Progressive part of their party.
“It’s not just about the hectares, it’s really about the people…this agreement has so much transformative potential.” A wintry morning in Behchokǫ̀ set the stage for the celebration of a historic agreement made possible by unprecedented collaboration. ‘Our Land for the Future’ was signed by 20 Indigenous governments, the government of Canada, the GNWT, and private donors – laying the groundwork for a new era in Indigenous-led conservation and supporting communities in the NWT. This agreement will protect a massive amount of lands and waters. But it will also build a strong conservation economy and build up Indigenous governments’ capacities. The model – known as Project Finance for Permanence – is intended to address funding issues that often hamper conservation work while respecting Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination. A must-read from The Narwhal on how this moment represents healing and hope, and is an important step forward that illustrates the profound impact of Indigenous leadership.

The UK’s diverse #marine and #coastal #ecosystems play a critical role in underpinning our economy, health and wellbeing, but they are increasingly threatened by growing pressures. #NaturalCapitalMarkets provide a route to unlock much-needed #PrivateFinance to safeguard and restore our vital marine and coastal environments. Today we’ve published a first-of-its-kind roadmap to bring us one step closer to establishing high-integrity marine natural capital markets in the UK, building on existing actions across the country. This Roadmap, funded by The Crown Estate, Blue Marine Foundation, Crown Estate Scotland, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and University of Portsmouth and developed by Finance Earth and Pollination, was co-designed through a year-long initiative involving more than 200 UK and international stakeholders. It sets out recommendations and key actions for developing high-integrity markets that can support the conservation and restoration of the UK’s vital marine and coastal environments, delivering real, measurable value to people and nature.
