𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐤𝐥𝐰𝐚 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫 In 1993, during my time with the Navy in the UN mission in Somalia, I learned some of the harshest lessons of my life. Lessons about survival, strategy and the strength needed to face the unknown. This reminds me of 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐚 𝐙𝐮𝐥𝐮, a leader from southern Africa in the early 19th century. Shaka rose to power during a time of chaos, uniting fragmented clans into the Zulu Kingdom. His leadership wasn’t just about strength—it was about strategy and discipline in the face of overwhelming challenges. One of Shaka’s innovations was the 𝐢𝐤𝐥𝐰𝐚 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫. Before him, warriors fought with long throwing spears but Shaka saw the limitations of this approach. He introduced the iklwa, a short stabbing spear designed for close combat. It wasn’t just a new weapon—it was a symbol of a 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠. The iklwa transformed his warriors into a relentless force, emphasizing precision, and agility. It was about dominating with clear intent and focused action. Today, the offshore wind industry feels like a modern jungle, where the challenges are relentless and the path forward is unclear. The tools we once relied on no longer seem enough, and the pressure to adapt has never been greater. But like Shaka and his warriors, we have the capacity to innovate, to rethink how we approach our challenges, and to find the tools that will help us thrive. The jungle is unforgiving, but it also sharpens those who are willing to rise to its challenges. At the same time, even warriors need to rest. This weekend, let’s take a step back to recharge—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Spend quality time with family, connect with friends, and care for your mental health. The battles we face are tough, but we’re stronger when we face them with a fresh perspective and renewed energy. Wishing everyone a peaceful and positive weekend.
