In a show of animal kingdom girl power, just published research on captive-raised western ringtail possums has shown bold females have a better chance of survival than shy males once released into the wild.   The University of Western Australia research project was undertaken as part of a wider South West NRM body of work between 2018 and 2023 to benefit the trajectory of critically-endangered western ringtails.   Over time, we tracked via radio signal, 143 possums raised by local wildlife rehab experts FAWNA Inc to determine survival rates.   Sadly, 55% of our released possums died with the majority killed by foxes. Can capitalism save animals? The AMES Foundation thinks YES! 🦏 AMES stands for “Africa’s Most Endangered Species” and was founded in 2020 by a handful of entrepreneurs with a passion for wildlife. By now, more than 200 members are involved with AMES Foundation – both financially and through their active support. They are all united in one goal: to make conservation and animal welfare scalable and thereby make a valuable contribution to the preservation (and recovery) of wildlife 🐆 Since 1970, we have lost more than 2/3 of all species worldwide. The greatest enemy of biodiversity is the loss of natural habitat. By 2030, 30% of the global habitat shall be protected – to this end, we will need more than $700bn per year. Donations and states alone won’t be able to achieve this. We need to leverage the power of markets, of capitalism, to attract financing. Today is #InternationalVultureAwarenessDay Sadly, in the wild, poachers in Africa have started to lace animals with poison in order to reduce vulture numbers. This is due to the high numbers of vultures circling the animal carcasses, and therefore drawing attention to the area, leading to the discovery of the poachers. This has contributed to a population decline by an unbelievable 97% in the last 50 years. Vultures are an integral part of the ecosystem in Africa, and their feasting on carcasses helps to stop the spread of diseases such a rabies, anthrax and TB, so protecting this species is vital. We proudly support the International Vulture Programme (IVP) Hawk Conservancy Trust, a multi-partner initiative that focuses efforts on the research and conservation of vultures. The IVP comprises a series of projects in southern Africa and south Asia, and most recently, Banham Zoo donated funds to purchase satellite tracking equipment for their work on Egyptian vulture monitoring.

It’s World Health Day! As we observe this day, we revisit our research with JNCC, where researchers conducted initial studies scoping the potential for some important zoonotic diseases to make a jump from animals into humans as a result of legal and illegal wildlife trade. Australia's 8,300 islands are a haven for around one-third of the country's threatened animals. Sadly, feral cats, foxes, rats, goats, and other invasive pests are wrecking these refuges. Projects to remove damaging invasive species, such as the one undertaken on Phillip Island in 1988 (1000 kilometres off the east coast of Australia, not the one in Victoria) are providing hope. That’s why the Invasive Species Council are calling for a permanent national Island Eradication & Recovery Fund of at least $16 million per year and a National Island Eradication Strategy. This fund would build on the proven success of past eradications to drive the next wave of major eradications of invasive species like cats, foxes, goats, pigs, weeds, invasive insects and diseases like myrtle rust. It would provide long term funding certainty for these vital programs to prevent island extinctions and allow species that have already been wiped out locally to be reintroduc ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ghg_77rg

It is commendable that the links between wildlife trade, legal and illegal, and the risks this presents on zoonotic disease are being recognised and steps taken to mitigate risk in this area. For that CITES deserves credit. However, there are two words used in this release, "traceable," and, "sustainable," that currently are meaningless. Until the paper permitting system still used by the majority of CITES signatory countries is replaced by an e-permitting system that allows end to end trackabilty then these words are meaningless. The system is there, the will is not, the time is now. The discrepancies in reporting on trade volumes at present is at times laughable (I can supply a document highlighting this to anyone interested for the Oceania region). The status quo on permitting means traceability is opaque at best and any claims of sustainability are meaningless until a transparent understanding of trade volume and movement is achieved. I hope the discussions around this project are the trigger to see an urgent roll out of e-permitting globally, which in the process will move towards uncoupling the legal and illegal trades.

New Publication! Wildlife culling as a biophobic response to zoonotic disease risk: why we need a one health approach to risk communication C. Jane Anderson and Jamie K. Reaser Zoonoses – infectious diseases that are transmitted between people and other animals – are one of the foremost public health threats. Public health messaging is a critical tool for informing at-risk communities about zoonotic disease threats and effective mitigation measures. Unfortunately, when not carefully crafted, public health messaging can foster fear-based (biophobic) responses to wildlife that may carry zoonotic pathogens—enculturating fear, disgust, and other forms of aversion. In worst case scenarios, biophobia of zoonotic hosts can result in humans culling wildlife populations or destroying their habitat. To better understand how public health messaging can responsibly provide necessary information on zoonoses risks while also promoting an affinity (biophilia) for potential zoonotic pathogen hosts, we conducted a literature review to identify cases of zoonoses-initiated wildlife culls and evaluated patterns and trends. We found that culls are frequently of native wildlife species, rather than nonnative species, and often increase threats to human health rather than mitigate them. We further found that the cultural impetus behind culls is rarely evaluated or discussed in the literature. Clearly, more research is needed in this regard. Human, animal, and environmental health are intertwined, and thus zoonoses prevention and mitigation is best addressed through a One Health lens.
