For second-year Bachelor students of the ETH, we offer the survey course Global histories of Urban Design. This lecture series, which runs over two semesters, highlights the history of cities, their ground plan, and their development, starting with, amongst other examples, the first settlements in the Indus Valley, towards the early 2000s. The aim of the course is to provide students an overview of urban development and the role of design, especially from a global perspective and addressing, besides the familiar examples also the unfamiliar cases, such as the initial design and the development of Islamabad, the new capital of Pakistan (plan made by the office of Constantinos Doxiadis). Publication: Barriers to #childparticipation in the formation of urban space Author: Shohreh Ezzatian, Urban Designer, University of Tehran Manzar Journal, Volume 9, Issue 39 - Serial Number 39 September 2017 Pages 38-49 Since the 1980s, there has been a focus on children's rights and their participation in urban design and planning. Children's involvement in the design process of urban spaces allows them to contribute to creating their living environments according to their ideas and opinions. This research aims to explore administrative projects related to children's participation in urban design processes in Iran and globally, in order to propose practical principles for facilitating children's cooperative involvement in Iranian society. The research method used is descriptive-analytical, assessing the approach and process of children's participation in urban design. The results indicate that relying solely on theoretical principles is insufficient for planning children's participation, and it is crucial to identify the key factors for the success or failure of children's cooperative involvement and apply appropriate administrative solutions from various societies to promote participatory urbanism projects in Iran. #childfriendlycity. #participation

Abstract: Children are the most important capitals of a society. Therefore, their education resulting in their prosperity must be the most fundamental social program of a nation. In this regard, paying attention to creativity and dynamic knowledge in their cherishing is all the time a determining factor for the society. Children who think creatively do not just merely follow something or blindly imitate that, but, in the future will, bring development and growth to their people through their explorations and achievements. Scientists believe that childhood is the best time for learning and development. It is mostly stated that creativity and learning methods are directly related to children's environment. Considering that culture house can be one of the best stages for the development of children in all grounds especially in rising their level of creativity, the present research tries to provide methods for designing a child culture house with the approach of rising children's creativity in a effective way. Based on some studies, playing and collaborative activities are among the most effective ways of increasing creativity in children. So, architectural designing of a space with the aim of increasing these factors will directly affect the level of creativity amongs children. Studying some urban sociology researches reveals that Tehran city pays little attention to children, and the issue of "sense of place" and belonging is absent in urban macroplanning. However, in recent years, municipality has set forth discourses regarding the rising quality level of the city with the "child-friendly" policies. Taking into account the shortages of the region and absence of similar grounds in Tehran city level, the present research which has been carried out with a descriptive-analytical approach and has gathered information through library information gathering methods and from different interviews published in "The First Kids Utopia Symposium" held in 2022, tries to provide a designing alternative to a child culture house for increasing the creativity level of children in the ground of Tehran district 6 municipality renovation reserve. Keywords: factors affecting the creativity of children, playing, child culture house, childfriendly city

Postgraduate students in the School for the Built Environment have been making a difference in the informal settlements of the City of Tshwane since 2016. The research activities of the Department of Architecture’s Unit for Urban Citizenship are not only addressing the needs of the residents of Plastic View and Melusi for a sustainable built environment but also for basic services and infrastructure. The Unit strives to develop the scholarship of civil engagement and participatory development within the context of a complex, emergent African urbanism. It simultaneously strives to embed a culture of responsible and collaborative urban citizenship in both its graduates and the communities within which it works. It offers a platform for vertical integration between study years to incorporate a socially responsive teaching and learning philosophy into the programmes of the Department of Architecture. It also establishes an interdisciplinary network of collaboration that can achieve the horizontal integration of its objectives with specific stakeholders through inter-faculty engagement. By facilitating collaboration with its internal and external stakeholders, the Department’s teaching and research can be aligned to improve impact. In the process, the role of a university, as an anchor institution and social actor, is embedded in the community. According to LinkedIn’s AI, answering the question of what urban design’s influence on community engagement is: “Urban design significantly influences community development by shaping the physical setting for life in cities. It integrates buildings, public spaces, transport systems, and amenities in a way that promotes people's health, happiness, and well-being. The AI suggested to me (For example, as an urbanist and educator, you could explore how strategic planning and urban design principles can be applied to create more livable, sustainable, and resilient places, enhancing the quality of life for communities.)

The University of Westminster has published an article on my Rwanda project, undertaken jointly with my partners Darrell Kofkin and Abubokkar Siddiki last month. We took a group of six Architecture + Cities postgraduate students, including to Kigali as part of a workshop with local stakeholders to design a new community master plan vision for a site on the urban periphery of the city. There we met with local stakeholders including community members and land owners (several of whom were survivors of the 1994 Genocide) as well as a number of government departments including the chief city planner, the district chief executive and the director general of the Rwandan Housing Authority. While in Rwanda we staged a series of workshops with the students to analyse the local context and form a vision for the future of the site. We also undertook a site visit and toured a number of interesting locations around Kigali, including a visit to a local architecture practice and a tour of recent projects. We hope to secure additional funding for an exhibition in the fall where we can showcase the students’ work. https://lnkd.in/eJZhVqaS

How spatial practices relate to nature by their interventions has now become an alarming concern in Bangladesh. Few dispute man-made interventions’ making nature fragile and their disrupting ecosystem services are on the rise. Community informed by media has started noticing this for remedial measures. Knowledge and experiences put faith in nature-based solutions in restoring and reversing the damage already caused. As agents in transforming nature, what roles spatial disciplines like architecture ought to play in redefining people’s relationships with nature in Bangladesh is an open question. Two undergraduate design thesis at DoA-BUET yesterday recalibrated our imagination by their place-based exploration of nature-people dialectics in landscapes - Sundarban and Halda river. 1701026_ঝুলন্ত পাড়াঃ Redefining Coastal Resilience as a Regenerative Settlement System Integrating the Sundarbans 1701014_A Sustainable Integration Between River and Human Settlement through Resilience: Halda Riverbank We, Ahammad-Al Muhaymin and me as supervisors, thank everyone contributed to the Jury and wish their efforts redefine as well as go beyond disciplinary boundaries. #buet #architecture #resilientsettlement #placebasedexploration #naturebasedsolutions #bangladesh

Architectural and urban planning #education in Africa needs a shift. This involves integrating local #social, #cultural, and #environmental considerations. The current Western-centric curricula are critiqued and a more holistic approach is advocated. #Interviews with #academics and #researchers highlight the gap between traditional grid-pattern city #planning and the actual needs of African #communities. The importance of community engagement and understanding local contexts is stressed. Students are encouraged to explore African #architectural #heritage, engage with diverse perspectives, and adopt bottom-up approaches. This will help graduates build #sustainable and #resilient #cities that address the unique challenges and opportunities in African #urban environments. https://lnkd.in/exvqraDf
