Nearly 10 Months after its first reveal, the electric harbour craft, Hydromover, is now opening itself for commercial trials, courtesy of Yinson GreenTech. "The inaugural commercial trial commenced with OPL Services on August 26, 2024, when the Hydromover vessel was handed over by marinEV at the Lita Ocean shipyard. Over the next few months, the Hydromover will be available to harbor craft operators in Singapore to trial charter the vessel as part of their operational fleet of harbor crafts. YGT revealed names of six potential partners who have provided letters of intent to charter the Hydromover for operational trials with a view to electrifying their fleets in the future. These include two Goal Zero partners, Lita Ocean and DM Sea Logistics, as well as OPL Services, Kanlian Ferry, RW Marine Services, and Tian San Shipping. The six parties’ combined fleet is over 200 vessels, marking significant potential for future conversion to electric vessels." This is a major step to help meet Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA)'s target to achieve its 2030 targets for new harbour craft, which is to be either battery-powered, run on B100 biofuels or run on net zero fuels such as hydrogen. Harbour crafts are like delivery vans and minibuses. Their short runs and proximity to shore make them ideal for electrification. The lack of engine noise and emissions also help to reduce scope 3 emissions for many companies. Things to look out for during the commercial trials: 1. Training of crew to handle battery propulsion and tech. 2. Availability of charging points must be made adequate for regular ops. 3. Ways to improve the return on investment into these vessels. How do you think the commercial trials could pan out? Feel free to comment below. #EVs #sustainableshipping #decarbonisation

Using Hydrogen is going to be a problem in the near future for passenger transport as well due to the fact that if hydrogen catches afire nobody no passengers or crew can escape such a disaster. A hydrogen fire onboard a ship will be the worst thing that can happen to passenger and cargo transportation in the world. a vessels still needs a lot of power to travel the high seas and if vessels go to hybrids diesel engines will still be the main mode of operation for long distances. you cant operate on electric mode for a distance of 200 nautical miles on a single charge cause the electric system will want to reboot on charging from the engine or generators onbaord the vessels. my concern is more related to safety of crew and passengers who have to sail on these vessels. and hydrogen is certainly not safe when it starts to catch a fire a whole ship or vessel. nobody survives a hydrogen fire just look at the lyndenburg air ship from Germany years ago in 1930.
Incat Tasmania announced a new partnership with Brittany Ferries and Wärtsilä to explore design and technical requirements for a 137 metre zero (direct) emission ferry. Incat CEO Stephen Casey says he is excited to be involved in the project as Incat pursues ambitions to build more zero (direct) emission ferries for the global market. "Incat has long-standing and successful relationships with Brittany Ferries and Wärtsilä, built upon shared values and a vision for innovation and environmental sustainability," Mr Casey said. "We know that battery electric propulsion coupled with lightweight aluminium vessels is the ideal choice to eliminate emissions, and we are thrilled to be continuing our relationship with both Brittany Ferries and Wärtsilä as we collectively lead the next evolution of sustainable maritime transport throughout Europe." Brittany Ferries Chief Executive Christophe Mathieu highlighted Incat as the logical choice for the project. "This is an important project as we look at different ways to reach net zero by 2050. All-electric power is a potential solution, best suited to shorter ferry routes. Brittany Ferries has a track record of walking the talk when it comes to leading the industry on sustainable ferry travel, as our investment in LNG and hybrid ships shows," Mr Mathieu said. "As a leader in shaping the decarbonization of the marine industry, we value our long-term relationship with both Brittany Ferries and Incat, sharing a joint commitment to accelerate the industry towards net-zero emissions shipping," said Roger Holm, Executive Vice President at Wärtsilä Corporation.

Brittany Ferries, a well known leader for delivering sustainable ferry services, has teamed up with Wärtsilä and Incat Tasmania to design a possible all-electric ferry for their shorter routes. ""We know that battery electric propulsion coupled with lightweight aluminium vessels is the ideal choice to eliminate emissions, and we are thrilled to be continuing our relationship with both Brittany Ferries and Wärtsilä as we collectively lead the next evolution of sustainable maritime transport throughout Europe." Brittany Ferries Chief Executive Christophe Mathieu highlighted Incat as the logical choice for the project. "This is an important project as we look at different ways to reach net zero by 2050. Brittany Ferries has a track record of walking the talk when it comes to leading the industry on sustainable ferry travel, as our investment in LNG and hybrid ships shows," Mr Mathieu said."" Along with similar committments from other players, it shows that there is not always a one-size-fits-all solution for individual players. In the case of Brittany Ferries, bio/e-methane fuel and hybrid propulsions work well for their longer missions. But it may not make sense on shorter routes, this is where all electric ferries step in. This also brings a great opportunity for ship owners/operators to extensively standardize electrical systems and propulsion batteries across their fleet of hybrid and full electric ships. It in turn reduces inventory, parts logistics and downtime costs, unlocking great fiscal savings. What are your thoughts about this? Feel free to comment below. #sustainableshipping #decarbonization

Making the Port of Rotterdam more #sustainable 💚 The Port of Rotterdam ⚓ is implementing more than 60 projects in the Dutch metropolis over the next few years to make Europe’s largest seaport more sustainable. The common goal of all parties involved is to create a port of the future with #netzero CO2 emissions and a #circulareconomy ♻️. The individual projects are divided into four thematic pillars: ➡️ efficiency and infrastructure ➡️ a new energy system ➡️ a new raw materials and fuel system ➡️ making logistics chains more sustainable #Rail transport is an important building stone for the port authorities in establishing a more sustainable logistics chain in this port of the future. By 2050 at the latest, all rail vehicles are to be powered either entirely by zero emission or sustainable energy sources. With its expertise in the field of #railtransport, Voith Turbo is also playing an important role in the realization of this challenging project. In the future, the proven OnEfficiency.StopStart system should significantly reduce the fuel consumption and thus the CO2 emissions of the Alstom V100 BR 203.1 shunting locomotives 🚂 from Rotterdam Rail Feeding B.V. used for #freight transportation in the port. The first vehicle is already equipped with this technology by Voith. Another nine locomotives will follow. 🔎 To learn more about the advantages of OnEfficiency.StopStart click here: https://hubs.ly/Q02J_tnl0
