A key aspect of strategy is recognizing your trade-offs—an important lesson I've gained from my strategy program at Wharton. In healthcare leadership, true influence lies in making thoughtful strategic decisions about what to focus on and what to forgo. By focusing our efforts, we can provide exceptional care, maximize resources, and create lasting value for the patients and communities we serve. Effective leaders establish clear boundaries, allowing their organizations to excel in what truly counts and achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. "Do you want to be an amateur at 10 things or world-class at 3?" Professor Harbir Singh posed this question to our Strategy & Management for Competitive Advantage participants earlier this week during a session on Strategic Leadership here at Wharton Executive Education. What was being conveyed is that strategy is a set of reinforcing choices and deciding what NOT to do is just as important as deciding what to do. Trying to be all things to all people/customers, tempting as it may be, is not the path to sustainable competitive advantage. It's the strategic leaders job to make it clear to the organization what it is we do and what we don't do. Who we serve and who we do not serve. Throughout this week, participants were given frameworks and activities to build out their competitive advantage and ultimately, become world-class through a set of strategic, reinforcing choices. #whartonexeced #wharton #strategy #management #leadership #lifelonglearning #professionaldevelopment

As we progress into more senior roles in operational leadership there comes an increasing importance of understanding how your business is governed. Understanding this earlier in our career helps us make better operational decisions with wider business context, even in more junior leadership roles. The Board of Directors and the Senior Leadership Team have distinct yet complementary roles in guiding an organisation's success. The Board sets the strategic direction, ensuring governance and oversight, while the SLT translates these strategies into actionable plans and manages day-to-day operations. Collaboration between these two entities ensures strategic alignment, effective execution, and sustained business growth. DO you want to accelerate the skills and knowledge to imrpove the effectiveness of your operational leaders? Why not look at our Operational Excellence Accelerator Programme. 🚀 The Board's Critical Role in Successful Transformations In a world where nearly 70% of transformations fail, the role of the board is crucial in ensuring success. Through various change initiatives, we've learned that a proactive and engaged board can significantly influence outcomes across three phases: before, during, and after transformation. Pre-Transformation: It's essential to ensure the leadership team is equipped, the need for change is clear, and goals are ambitious. Detail-oriented planning with specific milestones and KPIs sets the stage for success. During Transformation: Active board engagement and oversight become critical. Monitoring progress against key performance indicators and adjusting resources and incentives accordingly are pivotal actions. Post-Transformation: The focus shifts to embedding new practices into the company culture to secure lasting improvements and prepare for future changes. As professionals committed to transformation, we must lean into our role, guiding our organizations with insight and determination. This approach not only navigates through immediate challenges but also positions us for long-term success and competitiveness. #Leadership #Transformation #BoardOfDirectors #ChangeManagement #Innovation Tuukka Seppä Dr. Dominic C. In the context of business transformations, boards have the opportunity to extend beyond their conventional supervisory role and engage more closely with CEOs and management teams to facilitate change. This process demands that boards adopt a much more proactive and hands-on approach. For further insights, read this article by BCG Managing Directors Tuukka Seppä, Juliana Abreu, Dr. Dominic C. Klemmer, along with Reshma Ramachandran, a seasoned transformation leader and FTSE non-executive board director. They share practical experiences from collaborating with numerous transformative boards. https://lnkd.in/dCzFzC2Z #BusinessTransformation #transformation #changemanagement #leadership #boardofdirectors #boards #boardmember
