With Resolution 62/122, the United Nations General Assembly established the Outreach Programme on the transatlantic slave trade and slavery, and designated 25 March as the annual International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Modern slavery takes many forms and is known by many names: human trafficking, forced labor, forced or servile marriage, debt bondage, sexual exploitation, slavery-like practices, sale and exploitation of children, and more. In all its manifestations, it is the systematic removal of people's freedom of self-determination, and according to the most recent estimates, some 50 million people still live subjugated in conditions that can be traced back to modern forms of slavery. This is why political and diplomatic action against all forms of slavery is more important than ever.

NOTE, I ORIGINALLY POSTED AS A COMMENT ELSEWHERE IN LINKEDIN THIS MORNING REF: UN's Sustainable Development Goal-16, Peace, justice and strong institutions, UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs Based on my extensive critical experiences in process and product development from world class businesses with stated intent to serve humans individually and collectively from defence and medtech industries, and clocking some sixty four years of relating to humans, hundreds of them directly and many times more through the writings of other humans, its my 2 cents that there can never be peace unless there is acknowledgement of injustice at a fundamental, root level in a visible, manner in language that does not require expertise of some kind or other for comprehension. For example, had it been an international business, its my unaffiliated understanding, sustainable development efforts plan would have a line item to prepare and publish such an acknowledgement, so that the rest of the program is anchored on a uniform understanding of the extent of failure(injustice) and be able to come up with solutions ensuring all potential consequences of the failure are adequately addressed. In other words, in the absence of such an acknowledgement of the root cause, it is impossible to even aspire for sustainability.

Key UN Committee Adopts Resolution for First-Ever Treaty on Crimes Against Humanity A significant committee of the United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution that paves the way for negotiations on a groundbreaking treaty aimed at preventing and punishing crimes against humanity. This historic decision follows Russia's withdrawal of amendments that could have obstructed progress. The resolution outlines a timeline for preparatory sessions in 2026 and 2027, leading to negotiating sessions in 2028 and 2029. Advocates, including Mexico and Gambia, view this as a crucial step towards addressing impunity for severe human rights violations globally, emphasizing the need for a robust legal framework to protect civilians. #UNCommittee #Humanity #Russia #russiaukraineconflict #framework #wno #wnoheadlines #wnonews

#Israel must be put under #Chapter7 dear United Nations 🇺🇳 As there is possible #threat to the world #peace. Illegal occupation, genocide in #Gaza 🇵🇸 with the clear intent - mass extermination / ethnic cleansing of #Palestinian people. The Security Council has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. It has 15 Members, and each Member has one vote. Under the Charter of the United Nations, all Member States are obligated to comply with Council decisions. A Security Council Resolution is considered to be 'a Chapter VII resolution' if it makes an explicit determination that the situation under consideration constitutes a threat to the peace, a breach of the peace, or an act of aggression, and/or explicitly or implicitly states that the Council is acting under Chapter VII. The African Court of Justice and Human Rights holds immense potential for addressing serious crimes and promoting justice across the continent. However, the journey towards full ratification of the Protocol by AU member states faces significant challenges. Key among these are concerns over national sovereignty, political instability, and the potential for political leaders to be held accountable for crimes that could destabilize their hold on power. Additionally, the complexities of aligning national legal frameworks with the Court's mandates and the financial implications of supporting such an institution also pose hurdles. This dialogue is a crucial step towards understanding these obstacles and finding pathways to overcome them. It is through such collaborative efforts that way can be paved for a more just and accountable Africa. Looking forward to joining into the discussion and learning more!

We're living in a moment where anti-immigrant rhetoric and xenophobia are reaching an all-time high. We've been horrified as invasion narratives and belief in the Great Replacement have become normalized and weaponized. We've been enraged by the extreme proposals from the Trump campaign and Project 2025: mass deportations, sweeping raids, detainment camps, and a revival of President Trump's Muslim Ban. And we've been disappointed by the Biden administration's choice to implement more restrictive policies for asylum seekers when they should be addressing the real challenges at our country's southern border with leadership and solutions. Have no doubt: HIAS will be here to stand up in a principled way, even when the political climate is characterized by anti-immigrant narratives ✊

Corbyn questioned, highlighting the urgent need for action. "This shameful cowardice must be called out for what it is: complicity in genocide," he declared, emphasizing the UK government's role in enabling Israel's ongoing war crimes and genocide against Palestinians. #UnitedKingdom #JeremyCorbyn #WarOnGaza #GazaGenocide #IsraeliTerrorism #IsraeliApartheid #UnitedStates #HumanRightsViolations #Accountability #StopFundingIsrael #Justice #StoptheGenocide #BreaktheSilence #HumanRights #EuropeanUnion #InternationalLaw #CeaseFireNow #IsraelisTerroristState #HumanRightsWatch #GlobalPeaceSummit
