After weeks of issues with the Charity Commission website, I've now seen that all account access has been temporarily removed, likely due to the increased demand they have reported. Hopefully, this will only be a short-term measure (as promised) as without this crucial resource, charities lose a vital tool for researching potential funders - especially those without dedicated websites. This disruption could drive even more "off-target" funding applications, which benefits no one. Here's hoping for a swift resolution and a quick return to normal service. Any charity, right now, could start planning a major appeal which would raise a lot of money and transform your core fundraising. It doesn’t require any sort of ‘capital expenditure’.  What is required is an organising idea. The NSPCC’s Centenary Appeal was a record at its time, and the single organising idea was simply that we were 100 years old.  Nothing more. Why would any-one give because we were 100 years old?  But they did.  In record numbers. A fluke?  Our 200 Branches were independent ‘Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children’ until 1953.  A great many organised their own Centenary Appeals to mark their own founding.  They were very successful. Yes, if you have a need for capital organise a capital appeal.  Rebuilding the church spire is a powerful reason for local people to give. But, if you don’t, focus on the most powerful organising idea that you can.  At least consider a major appeal.

Had a fantastic meet-up today with Matty Lewis who heads up York-based The Fortus Foundation! 🙌 The Fortus Foundation was recently set up with a passion to reach the ‘unknowns’ – the grass roots charity organisations across Yorkshire who lack visibility and resource to grow. The Uk charity sector does amazing things, but due to certain red tape and administrative burden, many funding mechanisms are excluding these tiny but mighty organisations. It’s amazing what they’re doing to support small local charities that struggle to get grants or funding. How do you decide which charities your business donates to? At Keartland & Co, I’ve decided to focus my donations on the “changing the system” pillar of my impact strategy. Businesses operate within a wider system and many of the standard ways of operating are defined or dictated by that system. To deliver on my vision and effect meaningful, long term sustainable change, the system must change. My objective is to donate 1% of annual revenue with at least 80% of donations going to organisations that are ‘changing the system’. I make regular donations to ClientEarth, Good Law Project, ShareAction and Global Justice Now. ➡ Any others you think should be on my radar which are doing impactful work at changing the system businesses operate in? The remainder tends to go to charities that are doing important work in the local community, including Woking & Sam Beare Hospice and Wellbeing Care and The Lighthouse Project. *** This B Corp month I'm sharing practical things you can do to reduce your negative impact and increase your positive impact. This is really sad, not new news I know, but sadly all confirmed by the inquiry. I'm sure the family had the best intentions and likely thought they weren't doing anything wrong, but when you're using funds donated to a cause there is a huge level of transparency needed. This is why running a charity is harder than people think! This is why charity managers get paid and are not volunteers. This is why charities spend years building trust from donors, working hard to not only support the cause it's set to achieve, but to constantly tell people about that and show people how their funds are used. It's just like running a business only harder. People within a charity are experts at it and should be recognised as so, it's not a role anyone can do nor should do. Hopefully a few lessons are learned, but also a deeper understanding of the complications of charity management. https://lnkd.in/e5QR3HkG

This is research of real importance for the many for-purpose organisations which have gifts in will as a significant part of their revenue. Victorian research examined the apparent proportion of "missing" gifts (i.e. supporters who told the organisation while living of a gift, but didn't leave one). The number was truly alarming. Worth participating to get a larger, national view. 📈Amid a serious decline in funding - from government, local authorities and individual donations - grants from charitable foundations are one of the few funding streams that has remained stable during a time of increased demand for charities.
