🌱 I gained valuable insights at the Sustainability Business Forum this week, which was hosted by Franco-Thai Chamber of Commerce (FTCC), SwissThai Chamber of Commerce (STCC), Netherlands-Thai Chamber of Commerce (NTCC) Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce. Despite my limited knowledge of Thailand’s sustainability market, I left with many insights! 🇹🇭 Key takeaways include recognizing that every country has no one-size-fits-all solution. Thailand presents unique challenges in integrating a holistic approach to policy, government, corporate, and including the younger generation to make a high impact. 🌊 Climate Impact: Thailand and Southeast Asia are already dealing with extreme temperatures and coastal flooding risks due to rising sea levels. Climate adaptation to manage precious resources such as reliable water sources is crucial. 💰 Stakeholder Engagement: Financial impact heavily influences stakeholders, so messages emphasizing ESG as a revenue generator/license to earn, longer-term savings, and addressing inefficiencies are important. Suppliers have various capabilities, and support is needed to ensure no one is left behind. 🏛️ Policy & Governance: Concerns over slow progress, complicated licensing process, insufficient regulation enforcement, and transparency issues remain in reporting and disclosures. TH needs more investment than its regional counterparts. ☀️ Decarbonization Roadmap: The clean energy transition needs to be accelerated! Thailand currently generates 12% of its energy from renewable sources. Solar energy is gaining traction as the cheapest source globally, and EV adoption is rising (65% of new purchases). However, convincing stakeholders to make the transition, grid integration, and infrastructure investment are challenges. 📚 Education & Awareness: There is investment and commitment, but the goals are shifting backward and require a mindset change. 🔧 Workforce Upskilling is essential for filling future jobs such as technicians, EV mechanics, AI, machine learning, etc. From a planning perspective, it was nice to see an event powered by renewable energy sources, with business cards replacing printed badges and no single-use plastic. Even better, the farmer himself served raw bamboo straws and organic coconuts, which would later be converted to fertilizer. I’m inspired by the insights gained and look forward to learning more about the context in other markets. #sustainability #globalgoals #roadtonetzero #climateaction #ESG #decarbonization #eventprof

Great article summarizing Singapore’s interest in the low-carbon economy, and our efforts in supporting projects in transforming the energy and chemicals sector, carbon capture, storage and utilization (CCUS) pilots, bio-based economy, carbon services etc! #lowcarboneconomy #ccus #bioeconomy
"The global shift towards a lower-carbon economy requires all sectors, especially the energy and chemicals sector, to transform and innovate. Singapore intends to support our climate goals by decarbonizing existing industries while growing opportunities in the green economy...Singapore’s capabilities make us an ideal test bed for research in these areas, and many of these initiatives are in pilot stages with the potential to scale up in future. For example, the Singapore Energy Centre — co-founded by NUS, NTU and ExxonMobil — focuses on developing and scaling new technologies in energy, as well as carbon capture and storage." - Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) EXCO Member and EVP Damian Chan Great to see this coverage by Sustainable Brands engaging our US audiences on #Singapore's #sustainability initiatives, both in climatech and carbon services! #SuperJourney Edition 02 [Why Sustainability? from Technologies to Global Policies] Completing my second year on the sustainability team, I got the ‘momentum’ to connect my previous studies in agricultural engineering with my current studies in international relations. This allowed me to continue my sustainability path by linking technology, trade/market, and policy. By involving in many discussions on plastic roadmap regulations, food loss and waste (FLW) prevention, and single-use plastic bans, I learned how the private sector perspective is involved in sustainability governance. It is going to be a hint for my research project in observing non-state actors' participation in global climate governance. Big thanks to all my mentors during my two-year #SuperJourney, Ibu D Yuvlinda Susanta, Arya Kusumo, Priyo Dwi Utomo, and my work-mates Vicky Pahlevie and SINDY NUR SYAZKIA. Exploring the State of Sustainability pt. 4 The earlier posts in this series explored various innovative solutions that can help us reduce carbon emissions and leverage more sustainable sources of energy. However, while these evolving technologies show significant promise, the biggest obstacle that they all face is economic feasibility. Sustainability in a Growth-Driven System The self-sufficient solutions outlined previously may seem antithetical to profitability. How can an energy or transportation provider ensure repeat business with products and services designed to be one-off purchases? However, the limited scope through which businesses view the market needs to make a meaningful shift in changing for the better. It can’t simply be about reducing costs or improving efficiency – transformation needs to benefit the environment, community, and planet. Changing mindsets and economic systems would mean that energy and technology were no long a race, a competition driven by ROI. It’s about addressing some of our most prevalent threats, like climate change and resource scarcity. After all, social sustainability is just as important as environmental sustainability – and neither can be achieved when operating in a system that demands continuous transactions and profits. It may seem naively hopeful, but the projects and innovations outlined here have real potential to solve critical challenges we all face – but they will only succeed if they’re developed to benefit everyone. Cynics fluctuate between climate change being a non-issue and an inevitability – believing it will take a miracle to fix. However, as Arthur C Clark explained, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”. #sustainability #green #energy

Glad to have taken a part on Indonesia International Sustainability Forum 2024! So proud to see how the forum had grown to 5000+ attendees from all over the world since the first edition last year. Thankful to have learned and shared insights on the challenges in developing high quality NBS carbon projects at the panel hosted by Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) KADIN Net Zero Hub together with Ibu Kuki Soejachmoen Pak William Sabandar from Indonesian Business Council, my dear friend and fellow Carbon Market champion from Malaysia Dr Renard Siew, moderated by Saraya Cita Asmarani from ASEAN Alliance on Carbon Markets Several key takeaways that needed to be talked about more: 🌳 The value of forest in emerging markets such as South East Asia is beyond as a carbon sink for the world. It is the home for local communities, a place to earn livelihood, and also that forest products and its derivatives contribute to up to 10% of the economies' GDPs. Not valuing the potential loss of the forest is counterproductive to the effort of removing GHG. 🔬 Developing high quality Nature based Solutions carbon credit is difficult. With evolving methodologies and technical rigor that is required, how can we leverage technology to ensure the real impact from the project to reducing GHG and substituting economic value for the communities while accepting that humans' limited understanding on science evolves and not shutting the entire effort when a correction happens. 🤝 Govts and private sectors need to work together to achieve beyond NDC, and design the right financing tools to enable different types of NbS projects with its risk and upside for impact and financially. Interested to take a part on the conversation on how best to solve this challenge? Let's figure it out together with humility and resilience, that's what we do at Fairatmos. Want to see how your next event can take a small step to introducing carbon offsets, happy to collaborate. https://lnkd.in/g4iyuhkq
