💡 Tip of the day for Data professionals looking to land a new role 💡 If you want to stand out to recruiters and have worked in a consultancy role as a Data Engineer, Data Analyst etc.. Update the role title to include the role, e.g. "Data Engineer Consultant" When recruiters search for candidates, often we have "years of experience" requirements from our clients. If you worked at a consultancy as a Data professional for X amount of years, but your title for that role is "Consultant at X company", LinkedIn will not include that time as experience in the role, making it harder for recruiters to find you. I have seen a lot of candidates whose experience reflects as much less than it is in reality due to simply not specifying their role at a consultancy in their job title. On a side note, if you are looking for B2B work as a Data Engineer to work fully remotely within the EU, DM me, lots of roles available!

In very exciting news, I'm hiring the City & County of SF's 4th Chief Data Officer. This role leads the DataSF team (6 engineers, data scientists, & program folks), the SF open data program, & citywide data sharing & practice. https://lnkd.in/ggmj67Ve The CDO reports directly to me, & DataSF is part of our 48-person Digital & Data Services team in the City Administrator's office. We're a friendly & diverse team with people from many professional backgrounds. CAO is a general, but very forward-thinking office led by the excellent Carmen Chu (don't approach her about this please! just telling you I love working for her). It's a great place to form partnerships, & DataSF works with many permitting, safety, & critical services departments as well as the Dept of Technology, Controller's Office, & Mayor's Office of Innovation. Couple things you should know: - this is a hybrid job that requires one day per week in-office in downtown SF. Sorry we can’t do remote, but it’s for a pretty cool reason - SF deputizes all City employees as disaster service workers in case of an earthquake/etc. So you need to be near. - from the posting, you need to meet the minimum qualifications (5 years managing programs with data & 3 years managing professional staff) but you don’t need to meet all of the desired qualifications - though of course if you do, tell us! In applying for govt jobs, it’s worth taking a minute to make sure your resume & cover letter respond directly to the parts of the job description you meet. We don’t use AI reviews, but we do have non-technical HR folks. So please, spell out your management exp, for example. If you have broad data experience, some of it technical, policy chops, an informed perspective on AI & emerging tech, ability to present & influence at an exec level & are a great, caring manager & senior peer, we'd love to see your application!

I have seen a lot of posts talking about how hard it is to land your first data job. Yes, landing your first data job can be hard. However, it doesn't get any easier. Landing your 2nd, 3rd, etc. data jobs can be just as hard, if not harder . . . #data #job #hiring

Hello good people of LinkedIn. I come to you with a second tale of learning from experience in recruitment! Having reviewed the pool of applicants for the second of our new roles, we again have determined that we might not have framed it quite right (so basically the same lesson as last time I suppose!) In this case, the role is very much about making sure that the data products we deliver make a difference to the business. Do they use it? If so, does it change how they work? If so, is that better than before? This role is about finding out the answers to those questions and then if the answer to any of them is 'no', that's where the fun really starts. The reasons why a data product doesn't land may be many and varied. - We might have built the wrong thing (wrong requirement). - Users might not trust it (bad, untrusted or poorly sourced data). - The users might not understand what it's telling them (skills / knowledge gap). - The form of the data product, or its delivery mechanism, might not fit into the ways of working of the recipients (design failure). - We might have got the wrong balance of time invested in specifying the data product and focusing on what's supposed to be different when it's created (change failure). All of that being the case, the sort of person we're looking for might well have a background in data, but we really want them to also have had some exposure to the business side of what happens after roll-out. That means the right person might be more of a business analyst with a keen interest in data, rather than your classic data analyst. We'll consider all applications because diversity of thought will be really important here. If you know of someone you think would be right for this, please do point them in my direction. https://lnkd.in/eaByiWSK

Reposting from last week. New job posting for my team! We are looking for someone to work as a senior data analyst working with our Support Teams in Fixed Video at Motorola Solutions: identifying trends in customer facing issues, digging deeper to understand root causes, and highlight opportunities for improvement. This role is based in Canada and works on the eastern time zone. The work completed by the person in this role will be reviewed weekly by a Senior Director. This work will have high visibility and high impact across the company. Please apply online, and submit your resume and cover letter to me. Any cover letter that does not address the requirements below will not be considered. Requirements (read these, please): Living in Canada, working in the Eastern Time Zone, with existing work authorization for full time employment. This role will not provide VISAs. You must write good, easily understood code using CTEs to ensure code maintainability. Anyone selected for an interview will be required to demonstrate their skills during a 1 hour long coding challenge using our own internal demonstration data set. While this will be a pair programming challenge (i.e. We will talk through your solution, I will answer questions about the data, but I will only provide minimal technical hints on how to do something). I will focus on your ability to talk through a problem, explain your thinking and how you would approach something if we can't find a solution during the call. 2. Have intermediate or better experience building Tableau dashboards Same as above: We will be working on building a sample tableau dashboard USING the query generated above. Again, this will be using some type of dummy data, not real data. There will also be a pair programming demo for this too. 3. Pending success for #1 and #2 above, there would be done in the form of a take home exercise, with the final interview involving discussing interpretation of those results. Note: The Link is broken.
