The role of operations leaders in any venture is to create and maintain a well oiled machine (in the form of their teams, processes and process controls) designed to provide customers with extraordinary service. Success in this role, however, is highly dependent upon partnerships with all other functions. Operations teams can build a great machine, but are reliant upon all other functional partners to provide the "oil" to keep it running smoothly and not "sand" to clog it up and stall it. Things that keep an operation "oiled": - Consistent vision, expectations and goals - Disciplined processes feeding the operation (aligned service level expectations, lead times, disciplined expediting procedures, quality/engineering specs, supply chain processes, etc) - Consistent forecasting Things that pour "sand" into an operation: - Inconsistent, poorly communicated or complete lack of clear vision, expectations and goals - Absence or lack of discipline to processes feeding the operation (inconsistent service level expectations, unrealistic or inconsistent lead time expectations, no rules for expediting resulting in a constantly interrupted production schedule, unclear or unachievable quality/engineering specs) - Unpredictable demand forecasting that makes planning impossible. Operations leaders need to be adept at creating the right engine for the type of oil needed to make the machine run to expectation, however, no engine can be built to run effectively on sand. what does this mean? Operations leaders need to be clear with their cross functional partners about what inputs they need to make an operation run well and solicit their input on how the operations team can help them do that. All leaders in functions outside of operations need to ensure they are feeding oil and not sand into the engine. #teamwork #curiosity #leadership
