📱 Is Social Media Really That Bad? 🤔 We’ve all heard the warnings—social media addiction, constant scrolling, and the effects on mental health. But is it as bad as it seems? A new WHO study shows that 11% of teens are struggling with “problematic” social media use—more than ever before. With the rise of platforms like TikTok and Instagram, the pandemic has only made this more pronounced, especially for teens in the UK. But it’s not all bad news! For most, social media is a lifeline, helping to stay connected with friends and the world around us. The key is balance—finding a way to manage screen time without letting it take over. Curious to learn more about how social media affects mental health and how to keep it in check? According to a study by East Tennessee State University, who carried out a content analysis of 'thinspiration' images on Instagram, approximately 88% of images shared on Instagram using the thinspiration hashtag were found to promote disordered eating behaviors. Thinspiration is a dangerous online trend and a play of words between “thin” and “inspiration” that depicts thin-ideal media content with the specific purpose to promote weight loss in a way that motivates or praises dangerous behaviors that are usually attributed to eating disorders. The word is usually shortened to thinspo and different variables like thinspi, thinspireme or thinspiring among others, can be easily found on many other social platforms. This concerning stat highlights the need to offer accessible resources to young people, particularly in moments where their search queries could indicate distress. I have been a therapist for over 10 years and I have seen how mental space has grown, especially in our country. One of the contributors for the growth of this space is media, more specifically social media. Social Media has immensely helped in the growth of the mental health space and helped in bringing awareness on mental health illness. But along with the benefits, there were a few disadvantages as well. There is so much information about Mental Health online but some portions of it seem inaccurate and not verified by facts. This can be dangerous and can destigmatize mental health even more. Here are a few things that I take care of while scrolling through social media: 1) Scroll on social media as little as possible 2)Understand that Social Media is not reality. 3)Keep taking frequent breaks to engage with real and present life 4) Have gratitude for things outside social media 5) Give my eyes a rest by blinking a lot more. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthrecovery #mentalhealthadvocate #mentalhealthsupport #socialmedia

Social media deeply impacts our mental health. It can fuel anxiety, depression, and FOMO (fear of missing out), especially in teens and young adults. Filters create false illusions, and constant exposure to highlight reels can lower self-esteem. To improve your relationship with social media, set time limits, prioritize in-person connections, and engage in fulfilling activities outside your phone. At Impact Consulting, we support new regulations to promote safe and mental health; we always care about providing healthful and insightful content to our customers and partners. **Today is R U OK? Day – A reminder to check in on each other.** It’s important that we create a space where we feel safe to ask and answer the simple question: *“Are you OK?”* It’s a powerful way to show someone that you care, to start meaningful conversations, and to offer support to those who might be struggling. We often don’t realize the impact a genuine conversation can have. So, today, take a moment to connect with those around you – your colleagues, friends, and family. Sometimes, all it takes is listening to make a difference. If someone says they're not OK, remember you don’t need to have all the answers. Being there and offering a supportive ear can mean the world. Let's create a community where it's OK to talk about mental health every day, not just today. Have you ever experienced that sense of community and belonging while scrolling through your social media feed? It's that feeling of being part of something bigger than yourself. Social media has the power to bring people together, to share ideas, and to shape opinions. However, it can also be a breeding ground for amplifying mental health issues like depression. We aim to use social media as a force for good by encouraging people to focus on making an impact rather than trying to impress others. As Dave Willis said, "Don't use social media to impress people; use it to impact people.#positivesocial Got your attention?
