Interesting article in BROADCAST (echoed by Channel 4 today) about the death of 'mid-range' TV - the UK programming landscape is polarising to either big budget, noisy primetime shows or cheap volume plays. I'm not entirely sure of the definition of 'mid-range', but the US/Streamer strategy of slick, big budget shows with established IP doesn't always work... look at ACOLYTE and RINGS OF POWER. On the flip side, some 'mid-range' UK shows were huge successes and the incubators of the biggest talent in the world - stars like Ricky Gervais, Sacha Baron Cohen and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Does the world not see us as a bit midrange, quaint and quirky? Aren't we tweed-clad sleuths and Time Lords, Mr Bean and waffling aristocrats? Rather than aspiring for slick blockbusters maybe we should celebrate our idiosyncrasies and have the space to make content that's a bit weird and a bit mid level - because they might turn into our biggest hits?

It’s no secret that viewing habits have undergone a seismic shift in recent years, impacting audiences of all ages. With younger generations spending triple the time on platforms like YouTube and TikTok compared to traditional linear TV, the writing is on the wall. 📺 The rise of YouTube via CTV, the growing popularity of FAST channels, and the introduction of ad-supported tiers on streaming giants like Amazon and Netflix are further accelerating this trend. 🚀 The question isn’t if the ad market will tip in favor of digital, but when. At Channel 4 our ambition is to become a genuinely digital-first public service streamer by 2030. Brands and platforms alike must adapt to this new reality to stay relevant and capture the attention of evolving audiences. 🎯 #digitalmarketing #adtech #media #streaming
Et Too Tube? Me, to the U.K. TV community in January: “YouTube is the biggest TV channel on the planet and one of the biggest competitors for eyeballs in the TV ecosystem. Younger viewers in the U.K. are choosing YouTube on CTV over broadcast. It poses a truly existential threat from an audience and revenue standpoint.” Ofcom yesterday: "Younger audiences in the UK are avoiding traditional broadcaster TV more than ever, with less than half of 16-24 year-olds watching linear programming in an average week. 34% of time spent watching YouTube is now on a TV. Only 55% of children aged 4-15 watched broadcast in 2023 compared to 81% in 2018.” https://lnkd.in/gx4kuHG9 C21Media Neil Batey

https://lnkd.in/dxu2JqEn The Television Critics semi-annual event used to mean something but with year round programming, technological changes and the proliferation of platforms among other factors it is pretty irrelevant and desperately needs to be reimagined. When I was in the biz TCA was a big thing and I shared some of my fondest memories on a post from my blog “Revenge of the Masked Scheduler"

Correct Answer: A) "After finishing his homework, the television was turned on by John." Explanation: The correct answer is A) "After finishing his homework, the television was turned on by John." This sentence contains a misplaced modifier. The phrase "After finishing his homework" seems to modify "the television," suggesting that the television finished the homework. To correct the construction, you could say, "After John finished his homework, he turned on the television."

What a great way to start the week 😀 ! My article on Netflix and the transnationalisation of teen television, together with Tim Raats and Leo Van Audenhove, has just been published in Television & New Media. In this piece, we explore four key dimensions of Netflix’s transnationalisation of teen television. We conclude that, beyond simply diversifying its catalog, Netflix has strategically integrated various aspects of diversity within the teen genre as part of its broader transnational expansion strategy and cultural politics. https://lnkd.in/e8GzKxQP
