Reflecting on the past week of mentorship at Girl Pro Africa, I find it hard to fully express how transformative the experience has been for me. The weekly reflection sessions, especially with the girls and Coach Lola Ayanda, have been more than just discussions and they've been moments of healing for my soul. When the mentorship program began, we were given a book to read and reflect on each week. The book, The Success Code for Millennials, written by Coach Lola Ayanda opened up new perspectives for me. Last week, we explored into Chapter 2 - Focus Forward and Flourish, and Janet’s story deeply got me. Her journey, filled with delays, reminded me that staying focused is a top priority in life, no matter what challenges arise. While I learned many valuable lessons from the chapter, a few key points stood out for me: ⏹ Focus is essential for success, without it, it’s easy to lose track of our goals. ⏹Create a vision board, something you can see daily to motivate and direct your actions. ⏹Wake up early and plan, taking charge of your day sets the tone for productivity. ⏹Meditation and journaling are important because these are important tools for self-reflection and tracking personal growth. ⏹Successful people don’t give up, they persist until they achieve their goals. ⏹Opportunities meet preparation, being prepared is the key to unlocking doors when opportunities arise. Also, during our reflection session, Coach Lola shared a quote that has stayed with me: “the older you get, the tougher life becomes.” Those words hit deep. Lately, I’ve been feeling the weight of adulthood, realizing that it's truly not for the weak or lazy (laughs). If only someone had told me sooner! As I continue this mentorship journey, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity Girl Pro Africa has given me. 🌟 What role has mentorship played in your life? These are some of the recent opportunities I have had to mentor women from a diversity of ages and cultural backgrounds... 🤓 One was a young Somali woman that I had worked with, who sought my advice on how to secure part-time work. (This was the kind of work her body could handle, given chronic illnesses.) 📋 I encouraged her to come up with a shortlist of organisations/companies she wanted to work with, and to either build new relationships or leverage existing relationships for the work opportunities she wanted. 🌏 Another was a woman in her 40s who had grown up in the Middle East but was of Indian background. ✊️ She had heard me speak about power literacy and wanted to learn more. Together, we reflected on her experiences of power in racialised work environments and also in previous intimate partner relationships. 📚 I introduced her to several frameworks of power, which gave her a new lens and new language to understand her experiences. 💬 Finally, I had the pleasure of being a sounding board for 25 Indonesian women social entrepreneurs, of diverse cultural and faith backgrounds, who are preparing to export their products to Australia. 🌐 For these women, I shared frameworks that could help them craft powerful stories about their social enterprises. For example, the Six Conditions of Systems Change by Kania et. al, which can help you articulate the kinds of systemic change your social enterprise is attempting to create. 🎉 At the end of the week, I reflected on how satisfying it was to be able to draw on both my lived experiences as well as theoretical frameworks that I have applied in my work, to be able to assist others! 🙏 Shout out to all the (mostly women) mentors who have nurtured and encouraged me, to be the kind of mentor that I am today! From Timid Speaker to Confident Leader: Lessons from Leo Club (Youth Wing of Lions Org) Looking back at my journey with the Leo Club of Bombay Vidyavihar, it’s safe to say that the club took me from “Can I just stay in the corner, please?” to “Hand me that freaking mic!” territory. Who knew I’d go from mumbling my name to addressing crowds of over 100 people? And all without fainting—most of the time! Just 5-7 years ago, I struggled to share my thoughts, especially in English. Yep, every word felt like a workout. Thanks to Leo’s countless opportunities (and the patience of everyone listening), my confidence grew. Today, speaking to a large crowd no longer feels like "skydiving without a parachute". Reflecting on my time with Leo, I realize it taught me lessons no business course ever could—my journey with Leo has been a confidence booster on steroids. These experiences shaped how I approach my work at Winshine Financial Services. Now, it’s not just about numbers; it’s about creating real, client-centered solutions that make a lasting impact. My key Take-aways from Leo 🔹 Clarity is Power – Speaking to Leo audiences taught me that clear communication builds trust and connection, a lesson I now bring to explaining complex financial strategies. 🔹 Fulfillment Through Impact – Volunteering with Leo showed me the joy of making a difference.
