November is National Family Caregivers Month. "Celebrated every November, National Family Caregivers Month (NFCM) is a time to recognize and honor family caregivers across the country. It offers an opportunity to raise awareness of caregiving issues, educate communities, and increase support for caregivers." Accordingly, the Administration for Community Living the national observance is led by Caregiver Action Network (CAN), a nonprofit that provides free education, peer support, and resources to family caregivers. CAN selected the 2024 theme, I Care..., to highlight the importance of self-recognition and self-identity — key factors in caregivers’ access to essential support. According to CAN, more than half of those providing care in the U.S. don’t recognize themselves as caregivers. As a result, many do not connect with supports that can make a difference throughout their caregiving journeys. Therefore, many do not know of respite programs (these programs provide paid relief for family caregivers). Because caregivers play a vital role in supporting women and families battling breast cancer we love keeping them informed. For more information on free caregiver trainings and resources reach out to us. We can help. #wecare #caregivers #community #care #breastcancer #support

🎙️NEW Episode 142 Caregiving Unmasked: The Reality Behind the Shiny Parts Why is this important? Caregivers play a crucial but often overlooked role in a survivor/thriver's experience with cancer, and they tend to face many challenges that are pushed down, hidden, and never talked about. Due to societal norms and the unrealistic betrayal of caregiving in magazines and the news, caregivers may feel the need to 🔆"bright side" their situations and experiences. I had the honor of speaking with Allison Breininger, founder of the nonprofit organization, The Negative Space. We went deep into the world of caregiving and the importance of recognizing and supporting caregivers. Here are three key takeaways from our conversation: 1. Acknowledgment is Key Allison highlighted the importance of acknowledging caregivers for the vital role they play in the lives of cancer patients. Caregivers often feel unseen and unheard, and a simple acknowledgment of their efforts can make a world of difference. As a community, let's make a conscious effort to recognize and appreciate the caregivers around us. 2. Specific Offers of Help Instead of the generic "Let me know if I can help," Allison emphasized the value of offering specific assistance to caregivers. Whether it's bringing a meal, running errands, or providing emotional support, concrete offers of help can alleviate the burden on caregivers and show them that they are not alone in their journey. 3. Self-Care is Essential (But How?)😕 Caregivers often neglect their well-being while focusing on the needs of their loved ones. Allison shared the importance of incorporating self-care practices into daily routines, even in the form of micro-moments. From setting boundaries to engaging in activities that bring joy, caregivers must prioritize their mental and emotional health to sustain themselves in the long run. To listen to the full episode and gain a more realistic view of caregiving from Allison's experience as a caregiver and advocate. Let's do a better job of supporting and uplifting caregivers in our communities, recognizing the invaluable role they play in the lives of cancer survivors/thrivers. 🌸💪💪🏽 Don't miss out on this impactful conversation - tune in now on your favorite podcast app! 🎧🌟 #Caregivers #Caregiving #CancerSupport #TheNegativeSpace #CaregiverSupport #NavigatingCancerTOGETHER

This certainly resonates with me. The little things. The details. The quirks and characteristics. Capture it all. A member of The Carefullist community shared this beautiful passage with us and we had to pass it along. This excerpt is from the book "Pillow Thoughts II" by Courtney Peppernell. 💡 "Supporting Families Battling Cancer: Tackling Out-of-Pocket Challenges" 💡 Cancer is more than a medical fight—it’s a financial battle that impacts countless families. Out-of-pocket (OOP) expenses, even with insurance safeguards like MOOP limits, often create barriers to care. ✋ What Are Out-of-Pocket Costs? These are direct payments patients make for their care, such as: 🎗️ Co-pays: Fixed fees for visits or prescriptions. 🎗️ Co-insurance: A percentage of treatment costs. 🎗️ Pre-deductible expenses: Costs incurred before meeting the deductible. These families navigate challenges including: 🎗️ Medical Costs: Tests, surgeries, and follow-ups. 🎗️ Non-Medical Costs: Travel, lodging, and lost income. 🎗️ Psychosocial Support: Therapy, counseling, and peer groups. 🎗️ Special Nutritional Needs: Diets and supplements. 🎗️ Palliative Care: Comfort and end-of-life support. Sadly, many families exhaust their savings, take on debt, or delay treatments due to these costs. ✋ How Can We Help? 🎗️ Comprehensive support programs are essential: 🎗️ Financial and logistical aid for caregivers. 🎗️ Psychological, educational, and reintegration services for survivors. 🎗️ Advocacy for policies that reduce financial burdens. As a Research Volunteer with PCRI at CanKids KidsCan under Haresh Gupta Sir, I witnessed firsthand the incredible difference these organizations are continuously making in supporting children battling cancer. Together, we can ensure no family has to choose between care and financial stability. #CancerCare #Advocacy #MakingADifference #PaediatricCancer #Research #PACER #PCRI #NGO #CanKidsKidsCan #HealthcareSupport #OOPE #Support #Oncology #Health #Childhood #Survival #Society #Action #AccesstoCare #CureALLChildren #Awareness #Education #Team #Survive #childhoodcancer #financialprotection #outofpocketexpenditute #healthadvocacy #childhoodcancercare #publichealthadvocacy #publichealthawareness #togetherwecan
