Chief financial officers are planning to increase budgets for employee compensation, according to a survey by Gartner, Inc. In the survey, which asked CFOs and senior finance leaders to understand how budgets and spending will change in 2024, 71% of CFOs seek to boost average enterprise-wide employee compensation in 2024 faster than inflation. “Even with tighter economic policy and pressure from boards and investors on profitability and employee productivity, CFOs are outpacing inflation that has now almost returned to a neutral rate below 3%," says Alexander Bant, chief of research in the Gartner Finance practice. In today's competitive environment, focusing solely on executive compensation at year-end is not the right approach. This aspect of compensation is vital for influencing your organization's success. It's not only about attracting top talent but also about ensuring that executives' interests align with the company's long-term objectives. How can this be achieved? One effective method is to link a substantial portion of compensation to the company's stock performance. This approach not only encourages sustainable growth but also instills a sense of ownership and accountability among leaders. Well-designed executive compensation strategies, particularly those that include equity-based components, can result in: Improved Performance: Rewarding executives for achieving or surpassing targets boosts overall company performance. Strategic Alignment: Compensation connected to long-term goals keeps executives focused on sustainable growth and value creation. Enhanced Employee Morale: Transparent and equitable compensation practices at the executive level can positively impact the entire workforce, promoting a culture of fairness and motivation. Executive compensation extends beyond mere paychecks. It serves as a strategic tool that, when effectively implemented, can propel organizational success and generate lasting value. Let’s keep innovating and refining our compensation strategies to develop stronger, more resilient organizations. #ExecutiveCompensation #Leadership #OrganizationalSuccess #BusinessStrategy #EquityCompensation

Reflecting on the recent WorldatWork Total Rewards '24 conference, Chris Hays, Payscale's CEO, said: "This show is attended by a lot of really smart people, deep comp understanding. People are really passionate about the impact that comp can and should have." However at the same time, he noted that a divide exists between the passion and expertise of compensation professionals and the executive leadership within companies. The attendees, a collection of some of the brightest minds with a profound understanding of compensation, shared a common passion for the potential impact of their field. Yet, this enthusiasm and knowledge often do not reach the leadership responsible for corporate decision-making. Building a bridge between these two groups is essential. It's about communicating the power and transformational potential of strategic compensation to those in the executive suite. When properly positioned, compensation isn't just a line item—it's a strategic advantage that can drive pay equity, attract top talent, and catalyze business growth. At Payscale it's part of our mission to facilitate this crucial connection, helping to align the expertise of compensation professionals with the strategic goals of executives and budget holders.
