Empowering Communities for Effective Alcohol Policy Attending the WHA77 Side Event: Charting Alcohol Policy Progress Around the World by Movendi International on behalf of #IBC in Geneva last week was inspiring. My key takeaways: 🌍 Data-Driven Policy: Good data is essential for informed decision-making in alcohol policy. 💼 Effective Regulations: Increased taxes, retail monopolies, and comprehensive advertising bans can significantly reduce alcohol harm. However, global cooperation is crucial in light of cross-border trade and marketing. 💡 Community Focus: Policies alone aren't enough. Community action and upstream prevention are key. We need to innovate and engage all of society. 🌿 Addressing Blind Spots: The environmental impact of alcohol production has not been sufficiently researched yet. 🚸 Protecting Vulnerable Populations: Revenue from alcohol taxes should directly support health promotion and protect vulnerable groups. Education and awareness are vital. The message is clear: Alcohol is no ordinary commodity. 🚨 Mozambique in Protest: A Deepening Crisis Today marks the start of the fourth stage of the fourth phase of protests that have shaken the country in response to alleged electoral fraud. Among the measures enforced by the protesters is a ban on vehicle circulation between 8:30 AM and 3:50 PM, as illustrated in the attached video. With vehicles at a standstill, many people are being forced to walk long distances to access hospitals, airports, and other essential services. Meanwhile, the lack of political dialogue to resolve the crisis continues to worsen the situation, which has now escalated from a political crisis to a severe human rights crisis. It is urgent for all relevant actors to come together to find solutions that uphold democracy, justice, and fundamental rights.
