Inclusion, & the accommodations & supports needed for full inclusion, is a civil right. But today, fewer than half of preschoolers w/ #disabilities are receiving their services in inclusive settings. That must change. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gbUZR2Pk #DisabilityPrideMonth

As we start to think about the experiences of Disabled Students in Education, we can’t do this without acknowledging the huge number of challenges that are present in the system! We asked the LUNA community what the Challenges of Being Disabled in Education are, and here is some of what they said… You cannot think about each of these challenges in isolation, the cumulative impact on a young person’s education experience can be substantial! #InclusiveEducation #ChronicStudying #DisabledStudent #DisabledinHE #University #Disability #ChronicIlness #Education

It’s appalling that people still think disabled, neurodivergent individuals, those with chronic health conditions, or carers don’t “deserve” accommodations in academia. Accommodations aren’t advantages—they’re essential to try to help level the playing field and provide a semblance of fairness. People with disabilities or health challenges are still navigating systems that weren’t designed for them. Without these supports, they face compounded challenges in environments that already push them to their limits. As someone living with multiple conditions—neurodivergence, chronic physical and mental health issues, and fibromyalgia—I know firsthand how the educational system isn’t structured for us. For mature-aged students like myself who had to wait for a diagnosis before they could even begin to catch up academically, accommodations are life-changing. They’re the difference between merely surviving and actually thriving. It’s not just about “keeping up”—it’s about having access, dignity, and the right to succeed without sacrificing health or mental well-being. The narrative needs to shift from viewing accommodations as “extra help” to understanding them as fundamental rights that allow students with diverse needs to contribute fully to the academic community. It’s time to dismantle the bias and build systems that truly support everyone!!!! My response piece about disability-related accommodations for students is now out in Times Higher Education: "The idea that “accommodations have gone wild” – with too many disabled students receiving too many disability accommodations – is a critique that some are keen to make, with such claims usually accompanied by accusations of wokeness overpowering academic integrity." #disability #highereducation #university https://lnkd.in/geX9eKiw

Many schools, especially in rural areas, are miles away from home, making the daily commute difficult and often unsafe for children with disabilities. Without adapted transport solutions, these children face not only logistical hurdles but also societal stigma, which reinforces exclusion. Additionally, during the rainy season, the challenge intensifies. Muddy roads and impassable paths make it nearly impossible for children with disabilities to reach school safely, forcing them to miss classes and fall behind academically. This recurring issue disrupts their learning and perpetuates inequalities in education.
