It was A Level results day this week; a day that I remember vividly. Facebook memories helps - despite the vaguely positive air of this post, I was feeling anything but happy. I was always an A grade student. Until I wasn’t. I didn’t get the A Level grades I wanted. I opened my results portal, and saw Bs and a C. I was gutted. I spent the day applying to various ‘good’ (read: red brick, or Russell Group) universities through clearing, misguidedly thinking that if I wanted to be a lawyer, I simply HAD to get a good degree from a ‘good’ university. A year later, having left that ‘good,’ university, I applied to DMU for a spot on the LLB. A brilliant university, with a brilliant Law course. I then made it my mission to ensure that those A Level grades didn’t define my prospects. Instead of focusing on what I couldn’t change, I decided to:- 💜 Prove (mainly to myself!) that those results were merely a blip in my academic record. I worked hard - and now have a first class degree and a masters with distinction. 💜 Work on my employability. I’ve posted lots about the decision to apply for a placement year at Wilson Browne Solicitors (the best decision I’ve ever made!), but I also worked various part time jobs whilst at university - which helped to develop many of the transferable ‘soft’ skills I use to this day. 💜 Look at the bigger picture - there was more to me than just my grades and work experience! I did lots of voluntary work, travelled, fundraised. Again, all these experiences made me, ‘me,’ and I use insights gained from each of them daily. 💜 Not quit. Things not going to plan in life is inevitable. It’s how we deal with the aftermath that matters. I decided I wasn’t going to let those grades stop me from getting to where I wanted to be. I stuck to that decision. 8 years on, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else, anywhere else. For those of you that woke up to A Level grades that weren’t what you were hoping for this week, I’m not going to tell you that it’s not heartbreaking. Because at the time, I felt like it was too. And those feelings are more than valid! But what I am here to do is demonstrate that once you’ve had time to process, rally, and move forward, those results really don’t have to stop you from getting to where you want to be, in the end. 💪🏻 #ResultsDay #ALevelResults #Mindset

Today is National Intern Day, and it's a great reminder to support our interns by paying them fairly. 💲 Since launching SHE WORKS, I've been shocked at how many employers have expressed interest in hiring interns, but only on an unpaid basis. Many have said something like, "Well, unpaid experience is better than no experience." Why Paid Internships Matter… 👉 Many students, especially those who have been historically marginalized, cannot afford to accept unpaid internships, thus missing out on valuable opportunities. 👉 Research has shown that paid internships attract a more diverse and talented pool of candidates. 👉 By offering paid internships, we can ensure that all interns, regardless of their financial situation, have an equal opportunity to participate and gain valuable experience. Do you agree? Watch this powerful (& funny) video by the National Association of Colleges and Employers Shawn VanDerziel on the significance of paid internships. #NationalInternDay #PaidInternships #Diversity #Inclusion #UnpaidIsUnfair #Intern #Career #InternshipLife

🚀 And... It's LIVE! 🚀 We are thrilled to announce that #AskAnApprentice - our brand new online mentoring platform—is now officially live! 🙌 Over the past year, we've been listening to students, and one thing is clear: they want direct access to apprentices for advice and guidance. Whether it's about office dress codes or personalised application support, students are looking for role models to help them navigate their career journeys. That's exactly why we created Ask An Apprentice, an online community designed to connect students with apprentice mentors. 💡 How does it work? It's as simple as it gets! If you're a student with questions about apprenticeships (and remember, no question is a silly question), just log into our platform, type out your question, and a current apprentice will respond. Think of it like Reddit, but for apprenticeships. 🆓 The best part? It's completely free! 🆓 All you need to do is create an account on our website, and you’ll have 24/7 access to incredible apprentice mentors ready to support you. 🚨 One more thing!! Calling all current apprentices! Our launch has been a huge success, but we need your help to keep up with the demand! 🙏 We've had more students asking questions than we ever expected, and we’re looking for more Success at School Mentors to join us. If you're an apprentice and want to give back by sharing your experience, drop a comment below or DM me, and we’ll get you onboarded. (It only takes a few minutes to sign up and start answering questions! 😋) 👉 Join the community today: https://lnkd.in/deNr5TJv Let's empower the next generation of apprentices together! 🌟 #mentorship #apprenticeships #studentcommunity #careerjourney #apprenticeships #mentoring

Here are 10 things I wish someone told me before starting college: 1. Course > College in the long run. If you're a finance enthusiast, a commerce degree from an average college would make more sense than a philosophy degree from, say, a top north campus college. 2. You do not need to rely on your college's placement cell. A good job can be landed with the right approach despite the absence of a strong placement cell. Networking is the golden word here. Can't stress this enough. 3. You're accountable for everything you do. Late for class because of traffic? Your fault. A fan hit your head while you were standing and minding your own business? Still your fault. Practice accountability to stay ahead of the curve. 4. Quantity = Quality while giving examinations. Fair or unfair, the good old school days are over. Brush up those creativity skills. Learn to write really long and elaborative answers. They fetch you grades. 5. Research the attendance criteria. One of the most underrated factors to consider while shortlisting colleges. Reach out to seniors on LinkedIn and choose wisely. 6. Making friends is easier than you think. You can find like-minded people in ANY given college. Look beyond your classroom, volunteer for societies, chat up with people you find interesting. 7. College tag barely matters. Nobody cares about which college you're from as much as you do. Remove that stigma from your mind and stop limiting yourself. 8. Always check for student discounts. Services like Spotify, Amazon Prime as well as a couple of eateries offer significant discounts to students. Keep tabs on such offers. 9. Your college ID card determines your credibility as a student. Protect it like a king would protect his kingdom. Ask the thief to return your college ID card after you hand him your wallet. 10. Probably everyone needs to hear this. You'll be okay. You're doing great. Your 15 year old self is proud of you. I've learnt most of these the hard way so you don't have to. P.S. - These have been curated by my own experiences and the experiences of those around me. Feel free to add more in the comments. #College #Learnings

August is a month of significant news for many, especially for those receiving their A-level and SQA results. If you're about to embark on a new journey after finishing school, here’s some advice to guide you 👇 1️⃣ First and foremost - celebrate. A-level results are about more than just the grades on the paper—it's about acknowledging the journey you’ve been on, the challenges you’ve overcome, and the personal growth you’ve experienced along the way. Take a deep breath, give yourself a pat on the back, and enjoy the celebration with your close friends and family. 2️⃣ Stay grounded - It’s normal to feel anxious about the future, but remember that uncertainty also brings a wealth of opportunities. Keep your emotions in check and embrace the possibilities ahead. 3️⃣ Explore your options - You will have many interests in your life, give yourself the opportunity to pursue them. If your results aren’t what you hoped for, explore other pathways. 4️⃣ Listen to yourself - Focus on what you want, picture where you want to be in the future. If you decide it’s a specific degree, or in general university - start your research. 5️⃣ Seek help - You don’t have to do this alone. Talk to friends, family, or teachers about your feelings and concerns. Having someone to share your thoughts with can ease anxiety and provide perspective. 👉🏫And if you decide that your path leads you to university, upReach is here to support you.. You can pre-register for our free career support now, and we will be in touch with you when you start university: https://lnkd.in/dmRerVis

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘺 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘐 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘺, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘬𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨. I’ve been a little less active on LinkedIn this week due to midterms, but I wanted to return today to address something important and close to my heart. Recently, I’ve witnessed some unfortunate events happening around me, and it’s been a stark reminder of the challenges many are silently facing. While I’ve been managing well personally, I know that’s not the case for everyone. 𝐓𝐨 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞: Your grades do not define who you are. Yes, school and grades matter, but they are only a small part of who you are as a person. Your worth goes far beyond academic achievements. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, especially during midterms or exams, but I promise you that your value isn’t tied to the numbers on a piece of paper. If things feel heavy, know that it’s okay to not be okay, and the strongest thing you can do is ask for help. Talk to someone, reach out. You are never alone. 𝐓𝐨 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞: Please check on the people around you. A small conversation, a simple gesture of kindness, or just being present can mean more than you realize. You never know what someone may be going through, and your support could make all the difference. Let’s look out for each other. Life can be tough, but together, we can get through it.

👏 There is A LOT of bad advice out there. Some say, "Study what you love, don't worry about your future job, it will all work out." But this often forces recent grads to struggle through difficult years overburdened with student debt while they figure out how to make it work. Others say, "Be practical; study something that will land you a good job even if it isn't what you're interested in." Unfortunately, this leads many students to lose a great opportunity to learn, grow, and explore in college. And worse yet, they often end up in careers they don't like and aren't good at, which makes them unsuccessful. The good news is you CAN have it all, and we'll explore exactly HOW in this webinar, with Richard E. Czarnecki Endowed Collegiate Professor of Marketing, Aaron Ahuvia. You can study what you love in college AND have a great career, but it takes planning. As an undergraduate, you have plenty of time to both study what you love and take the courses you really need to get a good job, if you plan early enough so you know what those courses are. https://lnkd.in/erDPEy-u
