It was A Level results day this week; a day that I remember vividly. Facebook memories helps - despite the vaguely positive air of this post, I was feeling anything but happy. I was always an A grade student. Until I wasn’t. I didn’t get the A Level grades I wanted. I opened my results portal, and saw Bs and a C. I was gutted. I spent the day applying to various ‘good’ (read: red brick, or Russell Group) universities through clearing, misguidedly thinking that if I wanted to be a lawyer, I simply HAD to get a good degree from a ‘good’ university. A year later, having left that ‘good,’ university, I applied to DMU for a spot on the LLB. A brilliant university, with a brilliant Law course. I then made it my mission to ensure that those A Level grades didn’t define my prospects. Instead of focusing on what I couldn’t change, I decided to:- 💜 Prove (mainly to myself!) that those results were merely a blip in my academic record. I worked hard - and now have a first class degree and a masters with distinction. 💜 Work on my employability. I’ve posted lots about the decision to apply for a placement year at Wilson Browne Solicitors (the best decision I’ve ever made!), but I also worked various part time jobs whilst at university - which helped to develop many of the transferable ‘soft’ skills I use to this day. 💜 Look at the bigger picture - there was more to me than just my grades and work experience! I did lots of voluntary work, travelled, fundraised. Again, all these experiences made me, ‘me,’ and I use insights gained from each of them daily. 💜 Not quit. Things not going to plan in life is inevitable. It’s how we deal with the aftermath that matters. I decided I wasn’t going to let those grades stop me from getting to where I wanted to be. I stuck to that decision. 8 years on, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else, anywhere else. For those of you that woke up to A Level grades that weren’t what you were hoping for this week, I’m not going to tell you that it’s not heartbreaking. Because at the time, I felt like it was too. And those feelings are more than valid! But what I am here to do is demonstrate that once you’ve had time to process, rally, and move forward, those results really don’t have to stop you from getting to where you want to be, in the end. 💪🏻 #ResultsDay #ALevelResults #Mindset

I've had friends who were rowdy backbenchers. "When will you get serious about your life and future?" our professors would ask them. Apparently, those sitting on the front row were the ones who were serious. And that's true. They were. But what I've observed is that they were only serious about the next 5-10 years. Which exams do we have next month? What intenship should I take next summer? Which roles should I apply for placements in final year? How much will I be earning 5 years from now? Man, if you're asking those questions, you're only mid-level serious about life. Because what you're not questioning here, is the trajectory of the path you're on. That you'll only question when you're 34 years old, stuck in a traffic jam while returning from office at 7.23 pm on a weekday. Being a visionary is a byproduct of taking life really seriously. It’s then you start thinking long-term. It’s then you look beyond the resume and start building real substance within yourself. When you think that way, when you know that what you really have in the best case scenario is an 80 year window - you become more conscious of your actions. Maybe then, you'll return to the backbench, but this time you won't be rowdy. This time, you'll be an observer of the world and of yourself. You'll learn from various sources—be it entrepreneurial projects, college events, your peers, non-fiction books, and yes, academics. These experiences will collectively shape you with the new mindset you have. They will help you identify your strengths and discover your true self within this short window that you have. Most importantly, they will make you an original.

Today is National Intern Day, and it's a great reminder to support our interns by paying them fairly. 💲 Since launching SHE WORKS, I've been shocked at how many employers have expressed interest in hiring interns, but only on an unpaid basis. Many have said something like, "Well, unpaid experience is better than no experience." Why Paid Internships Matter… 👉 Many students, especially those who have been historically marginalized, cannot afford to accept unpaid internships, thus missing out on valuable opportunities. 👉 Research has shown that paid internships attract a more diverse and talented pool of candidates. 👉 By offering paid internships, we can ensure that all interns, regardless of their financial situation, have an equal opportunity to participate and gain valuable experience. Do you agree? Watch this powerful (& funny) video by the National Association of Colleges and Employers Shawn VanDerziel on the significance of paid internships. #NationalInternDay #PaidInternships #Diversity #Inclusion #UnpaidIsUnfair #Intern #Career #InternshipLife

Ever been asked how your exams went? 🤔 It's a common question that can sometimes feel like a nuisance. Yet, I've realized that it's not such a bad question after all. Sometimes, we need to answer it, not to others, but to ourselves. Okay, I'm not going to lecture here but hear me out about this. Last semester, I was in the same shoes and I knew I didn't do good in exams. being a science student I assumed it was because of accounts as I didn't have accounts as a subject in school. but when I saw my marksheet I was troubled as I had received an " A" in accounts. and it got me into thinking what exactly was it if not accounts?? after a little analysis, I realized that it was internals that reduced my CGPA not accounts. I worked for externals but internals didn't seem important and THAT was the problem! This realization prompted a shift in focus. and I didn't have to do much just a little bit more attentive during internals did the job! While I can't predict my results this semester, this experience taught me a valuable lesson: doing a little analysis and taking a moment to reflect post-exam isn't that irritating after all. And you know what? 'How did your exams go?' isn't such a bad question either. Ultimately, I've learned how important it is to answer this question, not just for others, but for ourselves. I don't want anybody else to learn this the hard way and wish it helps to others. Do let me know in the comments if you found this post helpful!😊📚✨ Have you had a similar experience? Share your thoughts in the comments. I would love to discuss more topics like this! 📚✨ #exams #studenlife #selfreflection #importanceofinternals #learntosucceed #analysis #growthmindset #studentstruggles #relatable #tellmeaboutyourday

Check out this short video from NACE that showcases why unpaid internships are simply unfair! #unpaidisunfair #funnybutsad National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE)’s current research shows that approximately 41% of internships are unpaid. (Is your jaw on the floor?? Because mine was at this stat!) Interns bring tremendous value to our organization (fresh perspective, diversity, eagerness to learn, & more!) and therefore should be paid for their contributions. And not just paid- but paid competitively!

August is a month of significant news for many, especially for those receiving their A-level and SQA results. If you're about to embark on a new journey after finishing school, here’s some advice to guide you 👇 1️⃣ First and foremost - celebrate. A-level results are about more than just the grades on the paper—it's about acknowledging the journey you’ve been on, the challenges you’ve overcome, and the personal growth you’ve experienced along the way. Take a deep breath, give yourself a pat on the back, and enjoy the celebration with your close friends and family. 2️⃣ Stay grounded - It’s normal to feel anxious about the future, but remember that uncertainty also brings a wealth of opportunities. Keep your emotions in check and embrace the possibilities ahead. 3️⃣ Explore your options - You will have many interests in your life, give yourself the opportunity to pursue them. If your results aren’t what you hoped for, explore other pathways. 4️⃣ Listen to yourself - Focus on what you want, picture where you want to be in the future. If you decide it’s a specific degree, or in general university - start your research. 5️⃣ Seek help - You don’t have to do this alone. Talk to friends, family, or teachers about your feelings and concerns. Having someone to share your thoughts with can ease anxiety and provide perspective. 👉🏫And if you decide that your path leads you to university, upReach is here to support you.. You can pre-register for our free career support now, and we will be in touch with you when you start university: https://lnkd.in/dmRerVis

Here are 10 things I wish someone told me before starting college: 1. Course > College in the long run. If you're a finance enthusiast, a commerce degree from an average college would make more sense than a philosophy degree from, say, a top north campus college. 2. You do not need to rely on your college's placement cell. A good job can be landed with the right approach despite the absence of a strong placement cell. Networking is the golden word here. Can't stress this enough. 3. You're accountable for everything you do. Late for class because of traffic? Your fault. A fan hit your head while you were standing and minding your own business? Still your fault. Practice accountability to stay ahead of the curve. 4. Quantity = Quality while giving examinations. Fair or unfair, the good old school days are over. Brush up those creativity skills. Learn to write really long and elaborative answers. They fetch you grades. 5. Research the attendance criteria. One of the most underrated factors to consider while shortlisting colleges. Reach out to seniors on LinkedIn and choose wisely. 6. Making friends is easier than you think. You can find like-minded people in ANY given college. Look beyond your classroom, volunteer for societies, chat up with people you find interesting. 7. College tag barely matters. Nobody cares about which college you're from as much as you do. Remove that stigma from your mind and stop limiting yourself. 8. Always check for student discounts. Services like Spotify, Amazon Prime as well as a couple of eateries offer significant discounts to students. Keep tabs on such offers. 9. Your college ID card determines your credibility as a student. Protect it like a king would protect his kingdom. Ask the thief to return your college ID card after you hand him your wallet. 10. Probably everyone needs to hear this. You'll be okay. You're doing great. Your 15 year old self is proud of you. I've learnt most of these the hard way so you don't have to. P.S. - These have been curated by my own experiences and the experiences of those around me. Feel free to add more in the comments. #College #Learnings
