Hello my dear people on LinkedIn, I have a story to tell- I took a course in New Product Development from #USCMarshallSchoolofBusiness & coupled it with my Communications & Advertising courses at USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Then I thought of using all these skills in my projects & internships. What do I get? 💬 An insane mixture of how to manage & market products, services & experiences through conducting: 💥 Customer and Product Discovery 💥 Analyzing the market and the industry 💥 Product Vision and Strategy 💥 Business Model, including pricing 💥 Collaborating on tracking AARRR metrics 💥 Go-to-market (GTM) strategy Connecting the user to the product is key! Speaking their language, to market your product, is the way. For my degree exam, I built out a marketing & distribution plan for Target. I was tasked to effectively promote the opening of a new Target superstore in Columbus, Ohio but with a unique twist. So, I dove deep into the Company's internal & external analysis. I wanted to know why this company exists, where it currently stands, what issues it supports, what segments of audiences Target has in Ohio, the competitive landscape for this brand, etc... I focussed on promoting Target as more than just a retail convenience to the public. Now one thing about me- I try to market products (in this case- the superstore) as something the customer needs. Building something nobody needs reflects a lack of product-market fit. That's the Law of Market Failure. So my new twist to promote this grand opening was cultivating a feeling of community among Columbus residents, and positioning Target as not just a retail giant but a local ally that celebrates Columbus-based brands. Basically, what 7-Eleven does in Japan & how! If Target is known for its owned brands, why not be known for Columbus-owned brands in Ohio? Here is the result, do you like it? https://lnkd.in/gcbb4CD4

Experience or result? 🤷🏻♀️ My daughter is in her sophomore year at a respectable university on the U.S. West Coast, navigating this huge chapter of her life as an international student. Like any parent, I’m part of a few online chat groups with other parents, all eager to share the highs and lows of their kids' journeys. This morning, the conversation turned to something I hadn’t expected - How to graduate a year or two early? This concept is a bit foreign to me. In U.S. universities, students need 120 credits to earn a bachelor’s degree, typically spread over four years - 30 credits a year. But some students take on more than 30 credits annually, pushing to finish in three years instead of four. Moms in the group proudly exclaimed how many extra credits their sons and daughters are piling on each semester. They exchanged tips on how to do this without paying extra tuition. It was clear that, for many, graduating early was the ultimate goal. The result seemed to matter more than the experience. Curious, I asked if they worried about their kids missing out on socializing, pursuing interests, or engaging in activities outside of class. To my surprise, they dismissed these concerns. One mom even said, “The earlier they return home, the earlier they start life.” Sending your child miles away, only for them to rush back with a diploma but potentially lacking lived experience or personal growth - it struck me as a missed opportunity. I could never put my daughter on that track just to boast about her early graduation. To sacrifice her experience, her chance to really live this moment, feels like robbing her of something precious. So, what would you choose: experience or result? #ExperienceFirst #ResultFirst #StudyAbroad P.S. Here’s me my DD1 enjoying a British summer festival experience earlier in August.

I took a career test in high school. It said I should either be a military officer or a cop. I laughed hysterically and decided to figure it out on my own. That's how it was in the '99 and the 2000 (and 2001 😁 ). Take a test, pick a career , choose a college and a major accordingly, do an internship, get a job, keep the job, retire, go to Florida for golf and beaches. Things didn't go like that for me. I went to college on a basketball scholarship. Had that scholarship revoked (new coach cut athletes she didn't recruit except for the seniors). Ended up running track at another college. Changed my major from journalism to English. Was gonna go to law school. Didn't go to law school. Worked with young women on a college campus. Got a teaching license. Taught in Mississippi. Worked as a fitness and sports performance coach at a start-up in Texas. Taught overseas in China. Came home. Worked my writing business full-time. Worked as a CSM in ed tech. Now, I'm giving everything to my own company where I speak, facilitate workshops, and write. There was no personality-test-generated route for that path. And I'm not special. There probably wasn't one for your path, either, and there isn't one for today's students, because LIFE DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT. For a while, I beat myself up for not just choosing something, keeping my head down, and seeing it through to age 65. Then I realized the truth. Life isn't linear. The job market isn't linear. Paths aren't guaranteed. We're not the same people we were 20 years ago. We change. Things change. The only thing we can expect is the unexpected. The art of it is connecting all those dots in your life--all the stuff you've done, all the jobs you've had, all the cool experiences that had nothing to do with work, your strengths, your weaknesses, your heartbreaks. No matter how disconnected it seems, it isn't. The strand connecting the dots is you, and you alone get to decide what success is. I wish somebody would have told me THAT my senior year of high school.

December Already — Phew! Exams are done for those finishing their high school finals or wrapping up their last semester at university. If you’re looking for someone to bounce ideas off about what’s next, I’m happy to chat. What do I know? I’ve worked in the outsourcing sector, global business, a Big Four firm, and now I’m in the banking sector. There’s still so much I haven’t seen or experienced, but I’ve learned plenty along the way. What now? Not everyone is destined to follow the same path, and one thing I wish people had asked me more often is: What do you like? If you close your eyes and picture yourself in three years, what do you see yourself waking up to? -What environment would empower your personality? -What kind of clients do you see yourself working with? -What’s your financial situation? -What would motivate you to study? -Can you balance work and study at the same time? -Do you want to enjoy university life simply because you can? -What will you do based on your results? -Do you want something exceptional or conventional? When I was in school, I thought I’d do science and end up in the medical field. Life, however, had other plans. I ended up traveling to and living in beautiful Ireland. My HSC results were just CDDs, but I turned out okay 😅. I now love waking up and working for my clients—the incredible staff at the organizations I’ve been part of. Over the years, I’ve encountered diverse people—tough, mean, sweet, intelligent, and unconventional. The beauty of these diverse traits is that, when I look back, I realize how much these people have shaped who I’ve become and who I will be. And I’ve grown to adore everyone—even the toughest and the meanest—because, let’s be honest, they’ve taught me the most (or at least given me great stories to tell).

It was A Level results day this week; a day that I remember vividly. Facebook memories helps - despite the vaguely positive air of this post, I was feeling anything but happy. I was always an A grade student. Until I wasn’t. I didn’t get the A Level grades I wanted. I opened my results portal, and saw Bs and a C. I was gutted. I spent the day applying to various ‘good’ (read: red brick, or Russell Group) universities through clearing, misguidedly thinking that if I wanted to be a lawyer, I simply HAD to get a good degree from a ‘good’ university. A year later, having left that ‘good,’ university, I applied to DMU for a spot on the LLB. A brilliant university, with a brilliant Law course. I then made it my mission to ensure that those A Level grades didn’t define my prospects. Instead of focusing on what I couldn’t change, I decided to:- 💜 Prove (mainly to myself!) that those results were merely a blip in my academic record. I worked hard - and now have a first class degree and a masters with distinction. 💜 Work on my employability. I’ve posted lots about the decision to apply for a placement year at Wilson Browne Solicitors (the best decision I’ve ever made!), but I also worked various part time jobs whilst at university - which helped to develop many of the transferable ‘soft’ skills I use to this day. 💜 Look at the bigger picture - there was more to me than just my grades and work experience! I did lots of voluntary work, travelled, fundraised. Again, all these experiences made me, ‘me,’ and I use insights gained from each of them daily. 💜 Not quit. Things not going to plan in life is inevitable. It’s how we deal with the aftermath that matters. I decided I wasn’t going to let those grades stop me from getting to where I wanted to be. I stuck to that decision. 8 years on, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else, anywhere else. For those of you that woke up to A Level grades that weren’t what you were hoping for this week, I’m not going to tell you that it’s not heartbreaking. Because at the time, I felt like it was too. And those feelings are more than valid! But what I am here to do is demonstrate that once you’ve had time to process, rally, and move forward, those results really don’t have to stop you from getting to where you want to be, in the end. 💪🏻 #ResultsDay #ALevelResults #Mindset

This first semester of part-time studies has been really rocky and bumpy for me. I am fully aware that I have been underperforming so far. I know that I have that potential to do much better and I just haven't been tapping into that potential so far. As I try to relax this evening and reflect on how I have been doing in school for the past six months, I am remembered of a quote that goes something like this, "It doesn't really matter how we start something, only how we finish it." I can't remember who said it. But that is speaking to me a lot right now. I know my first semester hasn't been very good so far. But it is almost over. And all I can do now is to look ahead. There's nothing I can do to change the last 5 months. Only what I can do in the next 5-6 months. Something else that I have been reminded by is during my time back in school as a student in the past. Every time I started something, I was never great right out of the gate. In fact, if my past has been any indicator, it is that I always needed some time to warm up. First year of sec school, first year of poly, I was always a B & C student. That was always how I began. And then subsequently, that is also when I would start to perform really well. So, if that is still accurate today, then hopefully, next semester would be my chance to shine again. #selfmotivation #selfreflection
