Sports day season at Scotland’s primary schools is well underway. Having 10 stations where half of all P1-P7 take part at the same time, forming queues and generally doing nothing. If you are like me you might be disappointed. My son goes to a fantastic school but PE is a bit of an after thought. This is not a dig at his teachers as delivering sports classes is not what teachers are paid to do. There is no specialist PE teacher in any state primary school that I know of. Each sport should be given enough time to be worked on. That means 5/6 week sessions (twice a week) with a coach planning a programme that involves: Skills relevant to that sport ABC work ( agility, balance, coordination) Playing the game itself Surely this should be a priority in our kids education? Yes it will cost money but it is absolutely essential that children are given a proper thoughtful experience during physical education so that more kids can thrive and stay happier and healthier as they grow up.

A little throwback from a session Stover School, as part of our role with High Five Sports Camps, with one member of the team using the “Rainbow Tracking” concept. This methodology has been developed for schools and colleges to equip their valued staff and students with the ability to accurately answer the question… ‘HOW ARE YOU?’ This simple question is so often poorly answered with a “fine”, meaning nothing to either the person asking or answering! We help young people understand more about how being level around the middle of the rainbow is the comfortable, “Awesome” space, but that certain things can push us up into a zone we call, “Spiking”, and others can push us down into “Dipping”, where we end up feeling low. This emotional literacy is crucial for young people in their development, knowing that people are rarely simply good or bad, but also to recognise patterns in their lives by reviewing things like their timetable, and planning strategies to cope with times (often specific lessons) where they know they are likely to either Spike or Dip in mood. I’d love to work with more schools to support with this strategy… If you are a teacher, school leader (particularly Pastoral Leads), parent, or working in support roles at schools and you can recognise the value of this kind of input, please find out more here. 🌈🐘 https://lnkd.in/eyWBMnT3 #MentalHealth #SummerCamps Worth mention to Ben Knight at High Five Sports and Activities Camps!

🌟 Calling All Education and Community Enthusiasts! 🌟 As educators, we're constantly striving to create an environment where every student can thrive academically, emotionally, and physically. However, one critical aspect often overlooked is the state of township school's sports field. A study i conducted delved into the impact of a derelict school sports field on our learners and the wider community. The findings were eye-opening: it became clear that the condition of this space may have a significant impact not only on academic performance but also emotional and physical well-being. To truly foster holistic education, we need to address this issue head-on. That's why I'm reaching out to LinkedIn network for support. I believe that by rallying together, we can make positive modifications to our sports field and, in turn, enhance the educational experience for all our learners. Whether you're a school official, policymaker, parent, or community member, your involvement is crucial. Let's join forces to detect, correct, or prevent the deterioration of school sports fields. Together, we can create a vibrant, nurturing environment where every learner has the opportunity to thrive. Join us in this important initiative, and let's make a difference in our school community. Together, we can pave the way for a brighter future for our learners. 🌱 #EducationMatters #CommunityEngagement #HolisticEducation

On average, schools allow 15min in the morning and afternoon for recess, with a 30min lunch recess. 1 hour of time outside the four walls of their classroom, is not enough. Exploring and embracing the outdoors, is crucial to a child's emotional, physical, and social development. Here I look at the many benefits associated with outdoor education, as well as some simple ways to get started both at school and with home learning. We need to do better, especially when studies show just how critical this time is for our young people. How much time do children at your school get to be outside? Do they get any time to actually explore and learn outdoors? Do you bring them outside for story time, or independent reading? I'd love to hear what your children get to do! #outdooreducation #outdoors #outdoorlearning #children #schools #getoutside #learning #explore #freshair #beyondthefourwalls #play #playbasedlearning #lifeskills #nature

Children at the top 250 English private schools have more than 10 times as much outdoor space as those who go to state schools, an exclusive Guardian analysis can reveal. A schoolboy at fee-charging Eton College has access to 140 times more green space than the average English state school pupil, the analysis found. The average student at one of England’s top private schools has access to approximately 322 sq metres of green space, whereas the average state school student has access to about 32 sq metres of green space: a ratio of 10:1. Eton students enjoy the largest area of land of all the schools in the country, with its schoolboys having access to 4,445 sq metres per pupil an area, 140 times larger than that available to the average state school student. Some of that land is also accessible to the public. The private school campuses include tennis courts, golf courses, rowing lakes, swimming pools, equestrian centres, wilderness areas, and remote camping lodges. The findings are a reminder of the profound gap between the early experiences of children from wealthy families and the rest of the population; just 7% of children attend an independent school. In contrast, some state schools have little or no green space at all for their students. #environment #outdoorlearning #naturepremium #education ##ClimateInEducation #sustainability #nature #greenspace https://lnkd.in/erYQqATG

Did you know there's a school where children choose how and when they learn? Alexander Neill taught algebra in a regular school but became disillusioned because he believed learning should be voluntary, not forced. So, he founded the Summerhill School. Its main idea is that children should not have to obey adults. They can make their own decisions, such as choosing how long and which subjects to study. Instead of lessons, children can go swimming in the school pool, draw, or simply relax. It may seem that in such conditions, children would forget about studying and just have fun. They could indeed just have fun, but eventually, a natural interest would awaken, and children would come and learn with pleasure. The Summerhill School was approved by the UN, and inspections have shown a high quality of education there. Neill believed that a child's happiness is paramount in upbringing, and the source of this happiness is personal freedom. What do you think about this approach to education?
