This new and innovative procedure treats benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), which is when the prostate grows larger but isn’t cancerous. By injecting tiny particles into the blood vessels that supply the prostate, doctors can reduce blood flow, which shrinks the prostate and eases symptoms like trouble urinating—all without surgery. Sitting across from me in the studio as a gentleman called Doctor Chris Rogan and Chris is what we call an interventional radiologist. He practices out of the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse Centre in Sydney, truly one of the world's most magnificent cancer facilities and also the wonderful Sydney Adventist Hospital. When you say interventional radiology, they might think we take X-rays or something like that, but actually it's more like an image guided pinhole surgery. Essentially you'd know it from your cardiology background. Now cardiology has changed. It's all, it's all stents and it's all done through a pinhole mostly. And the same things happening over time as as technology advances, we have the opportunity to treat with minimally invasive techniques, which means getting out of hospital faster and less risk. And also image guidance. So we're able to target directly to the problem using an ultrasound, CT or X-ray guidance. So tell me, what is the current treatments for benign prostatic hypertrophy or big prostate and what do you do? Yeah, well, I. Working with urologist who manage this comprehensively. But if you look at it and a spectrum from the least invasive to the most invasive, you know, I love your lifestyle focus, you know, so patients can manage these things simply initially by, you know, reducing their fluid intake or being aware of where the toilet is and or, or taking some herbs. But then the next step up is towards medical therapy, which are things which relax the bladder or change the way hormones are metabolised. And then the next step up is this. Group, which is really what I want to talk about tonight, which is minimally invasive therapies. Now these minimally invasive therapies, there's actually a a basket of them which allow patients to get good symptom relief, but take on less risk and be out of hospital faster. One of those is prostate embolisation, which is my expert area and the other and there's a couple of others that are administered by some urologists. OK, but the prostate artery embolization, what does that mean? Yeah, so embolization, probably never heard of it. But it's basically a term for reducing the blood flow to an organ. So we use that like if someone's in a car accident, you can stop them bleeding. That's the way we do it now, not with surgery most of the time, but specific to the prostate, When you reduce the blood flow to an organ, especially an overgrown organ like the prostate or uterus, in gradually shrinks. A reduction in blood supply means in a gradual reduction in the nutrient supply to that organ. And we see shrinkage, for example, in the prostate over about 3 months, we see it shrink by about. 3540%, yeah. And that's all you would need to get significant symptom relief. So that essentially turns back the clock 1015 years. And what we see is in trials it shows that basically patients feel the same as if they've had the the more major surgery.

We’re excited to announce that our article, Improving Sternal Closure Outcomes in Cardiac Surgery: Polyethylene Suture Tapes vs. Steel Wires, has been published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine! Our study dives into the limitations of traditional steel wires for sternal closure, especially in high-risk cardiac surgery patients, and highlights the potential of a novel suture tape system. The results? Remarkable improvements in patient outcomes, including: Reduced sternal wound infections (1% vs. 5%) Zero sternal dehiscence compared to 5% with wires Significantly less postoperative pain Shorter closure times (11 min vs. 19 min on average) Substantial cost savings, especially for obese patients. These findings pave the way for better care for high-risk patients and open the door for innovation in cardiac surgery. We hope this work sparks further conversation and collaboration in improving surgical outcomes. #Endotoxemia is frequent in critically ill patients, including patients undergoing cardiac surgery [1], or patients who are being resuscitated after cardiac arrest [2].
