Tech companies have laid off more than 130k employees in 2024 😱 Some software engineers are less likely to be laid off, and if they are, they bounce back quickly. Want to know their secret? Here are three simple tips: 1. Focus on Core Skills: Don’t limit yourself to just one technology or product. Build skills that you can use anywhere. Ask yourself: "Can I succeed in a completely different team or company?" The more adaptable you are, the better! 2. Improve Your Soft Skills: Communication, leadership, and project management are just as important as coding. These skills help you work well with others and get projects done, especially in big companies with lots of teams. 3. Learn System Design: Understanding how to design systems makes you more valuable. It’s not just about coding—it's about planning and creating strong, scalable solutions. This skill is crucial if you want to move up in your career. The tech world is always changing. To stay ahead, focus on these skills to make yourself more secure in your job and ready for any challenge! #SoftwareEngineering #TechLayoffs #SkillsToSucceed #CareerAdvice

Happy Friday, everyone! 🚀 I’ve had this on the back burner for a while, but with the mantra “When was the last time you did something for the first time?” echoing in my mind, I finally decided to bite the bullet. This is my first blog post, so - Hello, world! 👋 With layoffs impacting so many engineers lately, I wanted to explore the idea of the "complete" software engineer—what that means, how to build a strong resume, present yourself effectively, and choose tasks that align with your long-term growth. In the post, I also share a resource that’s helped me organize my own career and skills over the years. I hope it can be useful to others too! I’d love to hear your thoughts—feedback is always welcome and appreciated. #SoftwareEngineering #TechCareers #CareerDevelopment #Resume #Startup

🚀 From Laid Off to Hired: A Software Engineer’s 2-Month Journey I recently came across an inspiring story by David Weiss, a Software Engineer, who secured a new role in just 2 months after being laid off. His approach is exactly the kind of inspiration I need as I start my own journey as a software engineer job-seeker. Here are some key takeaways from his strategy: 1️⃣ Leverage Your Network: Introductions and referrals made all the difference. 2️⃣ Build Your Brand: Sharing expertise online can open unexpected doors. 3️⃣ Track Progress: A structured approach, like using a "Notion tracker", can help stay organized. 4️⃣ Stay Positive: Focus on what’s within your control and keep moving forward. You can read his full story here https://lnkd.in/g2gyKUnT As I begin this new chapter, I’d love to connect with anyone who can share advice, insights, or opportunities in the tech space. Let’s support each other in navigating today’s challenging job market! #OpenToWork #SoftwareEngineering #JobSearch #Networking

Software Engineers with 1-3 years of work experience in #tech, as much as your mom loves you, she is NOT hiring you for $100K+ to build her a recipe website. Your technical skills are ONLY as valuable as ↳ WHO you connect with (other SWE in tech companies) ↳ WHAT they are used to build (product) ↳ WHERE they are being used (domain expertise) The reason Big Tech pays so much for SWE is because every SWE makes them Millions of dollars. 🤯 💵 💵 💵 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗢𝗡𝗟𝗬 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁, 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲. Software engineering is easy. Reallyyyy?? 🤔 Let's be real, if you've ever heard someone say "coding is a piece of cake," they're either superhuman or kidding. 😅 The reality? It’s tough, challenging, and often overwhelming. The struggle is REAL: 🧠 Constant Learning: New frameworks, languages, tools... The tech world doesn’t slow down, and neither can we! Staying up to date is a full-time job on its own. 📚 ⏳ Long Hours: Those late nights debugging, endless caffeine refills, and that one bug that takes days to find. Yeah, we’ve all been there. 📝 Interview Gauntlets: Cracking coding interviews feels like preparing for a marathon while running a sprint. Algorithms, system design, behavioral questions—it's a mental workout! 💪 💼 Job Security?: Even if you land your dream job, there's always the looming threat of layoffs in an ever-changing industry. It’s stressful. 🌐 Imposter Syndrome: Let’s not forget the constant feeling of “Am I even good enough?” when surrounded by brilliant minds. 🤹 Wearing Many Hats: Some days you're coding, other days you're debugging, handling PR reviews, managing deployments, or dealing with clients. It’s a juggling act. 💻 Burnout is Real: With everything we juggle, burnout can creep up on us. Balancing deadlines and personal life? That’s a whole other challenge. But here's the thing—despite all the hurdles, we do it because we love it. 🧑💻 The thrill of solving problems, building something new, and constantly pushing our limits is what keeps us going. To all my fellow engineers out there, whether you're in the thick of it or just starting out—keep grinding. It’s a tough road, but it’s worth it. 🚀 #softwareEngineering #developers #motivation #freshers

Don't Be Dazzled by Titles: Build a Career of Impact in Software Engineering In today's competitive tech landscape, companies might use inflated titles to entice and retain talent. Don't be misled – a true sense of accomplishment comes from impactful work, not a fancy label. While titles offer a framework for understanding roles, focus on building a strong foundation of technical skills. Showcase your problem-solving abilities and the positive impact you've had on businesses. Ultimately, your value lies in the lasting contributions you make, not the title you hold. Fight for recognition based on your achievements, and build a career rich with accomplishments, not just decorated titles. It's the outcome and impact of your work that truly matters in the long run. #layoffs #hiring

"Becoming a go-to person gets you promoted. Here's how to do it as a software engineer" As software engineers, we often focus on honing our technical skills, but there's another crucial aspect to career growth that's often overlooked: becoming a high-value "go-to" person or expert in your organization. In a recent article by Jordan Cutler, he explains why this is essential for reaching senior levels and provides practical advice on how to achieve it. https://lnkd.in/geZczEuf. Becoming an expert doesn't mean having the final say on all decisions in a particular area. Instead, it's about being someone whose advice is sought after and who is seen as a leader within that domain. This could be in a technical area requiring depth, or in a product domain like the onboarding flow or payment portal. Cutler emphasizes that this expertise is often a key factor in promotion criteria at top tech companies. To find your area of expertise, Cutler suggests considering three factors: 1. what you're good at 2. what you're passionate about, and 3. what has a high impact on your team or company. Once you've identified your niche, the key to becoming known as an expert is visibility. This isn't about bragging, but about using your knowledge to add value to your team. Strategies include giving presentations, leading projects successfully, answering questions in Slack channels, solving unowned problems, and creating documentation or tools that benefit the team. For a more detailed breakdown of this approach and practical tips on implementing it in your career, check out Jordan Cutler's full article: https://lnkd.in/geZczEuf. How have you seen expertise and visibility impact career growth in your organization? What areas are you working to become a go-to person in? #softwareengineering #programming #developers

3moGreat insights, Chris! One thing I'd add is the importance of networking. Sometimes it's not just what you know but who you know that helps you bounce back quickly. Ever thought about joining tech meetups or online communities? They can be goldmines for opportunities!
