With Australia set to update its nationally determined contributions (NDC) under the Paris Agreement in 2025, we need a governance framework that emphasises emissions reductions over removal. In 2019, TASCHEN published Lo—TEK, Design by Radical Indigensm, in which I coined a new term that looks to the past to envision an inclusive planetary future. In my second book of the Lo—TEK series titled Water to be published in Spring 2025, indigenous nature-based water technologies and contemporary water projects infused with traditional ecological knowledge are profiled. On World Book Day we're celebrating Lo—TEK—a movement to realign humankind with the planet by rebuilding an understanding of Indigenous and traditional knowledge systems for climate resilience.

📢 New Position Paper on Protecting Cultural Heritage in Climate Change Cultural heritage professionals and climate scientists have jointly formulated a position paper in response to the drastic impacts of climate change and the insufficient implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement goals. Climate changes threaten cultural heritage with warmer and drier summers and an increase in extreme weather events. Between November 2022 and May 2023, leading institutions, including Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Germany, DBU Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, the German Commission for UNESCO, Deutsches Nationalkomitee für Denkmalschutz (DNK) discussed the challenges of heritage conservation in the face of climate change. The paper is part of the DBU-funded project "International Co-sponsored Meeting on Culture, Heritage and Climate Change": https://lnkd.in/ek4KsyHr By signing, the institutions commit to recognizing climate change's impact on cultural heritage in their work, addressing areas like knowledge systems, collaboration, and financing climate consequences. Flexible AND Resilient? Ecologists are beginning to grasp just how much of the microscopic plankton in the ocean is mixotrophic, meaning they can shift feeding habits in response to environmental conditions between photosynthesis and directly absorbing nutrients (or even consuming their prey). A team of researchers, led by our own Karen Stamieszkin, have pulled together the first basin-level analysis of how the distribution of mixotrophs is changing in time and space across the North Atlantic. Turns out, they may be increasing. That would mean that when water temperatures are warmer or nutrients are less abundant — as is expected in an era of climate change — mixotrophs may give the ocean food web a bump of resilience.
