🚧 rPlus Energies starts construction of 400-MW Utah solar + storage project 🔋 rPlus Energies broke ground the Green River Energy Center, a 400-MW solar and 400-MW/1,600 MWh battery storage project in Eastern Utah. One of the largest solar + storage projects under construction in the nation, Green River Energy Center will supply power to PacifiCorp under a power purchase agreement. “This project is being built in rural Utah, by rural Utahns and for all of Utah. When rural Utah thrives, the entire state prospers,” said Utah Gov. Spencer Cox at the groundbreaking. “Today, we’re not just breaking ground — we’re building a future of affordable, abundant energy in Utah.” Securing over $1 billion in financing earlier this year, the project is expected to create approximately 500 jobs — many filled by local workers — and will provide a boost to Emery County’s economy, enhancing tax revenue, strengthening public services and offering long-term employment opportunities in the energy sector. WHC is set to expand its renewable portfolio with two new solar projects in West Texas. When completed, these projects will power local facilities and contribute to regional renewable energy targets. WHC will oversee all engineering, procurement, and construction, providing end-to-end service for these solar installations. “These projects showcase our capability in renewables and our track record in solar farm development,” said Randel Badeaux, Senior Vice President of Renewables at WHC. “As always, we look forward to delivering safe, high-quality solar infrastructure.” Site mobilization is expected in early 2025, with preparation activities beginning in November. Australia's utility-scale battery deployment is experiencing a significant surge, surpassing solar and wind projects. With nearly 5 GW of new projects currently under construction in 2024, this growth is primarily fueled by market dynamics and increased volatility in wholesale prices. The investment in battery energy storage systems (BESS) has been encouraged by these factors. However, despite this progress, the current operational capacity of around 1.5 GW falls short in addressing the rising rates of renewable energy curtailment. Analysts anticipate a substantial increase in capacity over the next two years to stabilize the market and reduce volatility. Notably, the construction of new utility-scale battery projects in Queensland and New South Wales has set new records, with a total of 4.9 GW/13 GWh of new big batteries breaking ground in 2024. While this development is promising, it underscores the persistent challenge of effectively integrating renewable energy into the grid. The existing battery capacity is insufficient to facilitate the significant transfer of solar energy from daytime to evening and night, a crucial aspect for balancing supply and demand. As more battery projects come online, it is expected that market dynamics will evolve, offering increased stability and ancillary services to the grid.

Avangrid Renewables Completes First Solar Panel Installation at Powell Creek Project in Ohio Avangrid, Inc. announced the installation of the “Golden Row” at its Powell Creek solar project in Putnam County, Ohio, near Miller City. The Golden Row, the initial row of solar panels, will serve as the model for the rest of the construction. The Powell Creek project, situated on land leased directly from landowners, will feature approximately 300,000 solar panels, generating enough energy to power at least 30,000 homes annually. The construction phase is providing up to 400 jobs, primarily for local residents.
