£FREE webinar - Health Inequalities: how can we turn back the tide? Health inequalities are avoidable, unfair and systematic differences in health between different groups of people. They are rooted deep within our society, and they are widening, leading to disparate outcomes, varied access to services, and poor experiences of care. This results in earlier deaths, lost years of healthy life, intergenerational effects from traumatic experiences, and has significant economic costs for society. Join Professor Jim McManus, National Director of Health and Wellbeing, Public Health Wales and former President of the UK Association of Directors of Public Health, in conversation with William Roberts, Chief Executive, Royal Society for Public Health, as they discuss the burning issues behind health inequalities in today’s changing world. In this webinar Jim and William will debate the key drivers of health inequalities in the UK, including why efforts to reduce inequalities in health have stalled, what needs to be done, and how public health professionals can respond to health inequalities at a local level? #health #inequalities #publichealth https://lnkd.in/eP4AMzmP

This report sets out a vision for tackling health inequalities across England through devolution. The research explores the case for regional devolution as an effective approach towards narrowing health inequalities, and sets out key considerations for the government to push forward on this agenda. This includes: ensuring that economic growth acts to narrow rather than deepen health inequalities; enabling stronger joint working between local and regional government and integrated care systems to address health inequalities; and delivering a fairer funding deal for councils. #healthinequalities

🌟Health is a political choice! “We may have to look to policies beyond health policies to reduce health inequalities.” Alastair Leyland, President of the EUPHA section council, underscores the pivotal role of political decisions in shaping health outcomes, especially in addressing health inequalities. Alastair highlights the importance of upstream approaches, focusing on policy interventions that can effectively reduce disparities in health. “From pricing and taxation policies on alcohol and tobacco to recent bans on smoking in public spaces”, there are tangible examples of how political choices can positively impact public health. 🤝Let's stand united in advocating for policies that prioritise health equity for all. Together, we can create a healthier, more equitable society for all. #EUPHW #HealthIsAPoliticalChoice #UseYourVote #UseYourVote4Health #Vote4Health #HealthUnion #HealthEquity

Right now, people in the poorest areas are dying a decade earlier than people in the wealthiest areas of the country. But we can improve lives and reduce health inequalities by investing in the wider determinants of health. Did you know that local authorities oversee many of the services that shape the building blocks of health? They have the potential to re-evaluate the allocation of resources to improve people's health and wellbeing. Join CIPFA and The Health Foundation’s research project to explore how much local authorities spend on prevention. By getting involved, local government will lay the groundwork for a more resilient and equitable society – one that safeguards our building blocks of health. 🗞️ This article from the BMJ is incredibly important, but gives us a bleak picture of how things look for us as a country today: 💬 " The UK now has one of the worst health profiles of any high income country, especially among children, and its deteriorating health status is adding to pressures on the NHS." 🧬 Lifestyle Medicine teaches that Public Health interventions are just as important as Individual support for lifestyle changes in consultations, but Public Health is often more effective and equitable at scale. It is, of course, a great concern that our public health bodies are underfunded and lack the influence and power when we need them most. As a consequence, we all need to be talking about and investing in supporting people to lead healthy lives 📢 📢 Want to read more? Social determinants of health are conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age. These factors—such as socioeconomic status 💰, education 📚, and access to healthcare 🏥—significantly influence health outcomes and inequalities. Addressing these determinants is crucial for improving public health and achieving health equity 🌍. CCM integrates SDOH into the assessments to drive through those barriers. 🚨 New Health Foundation Report Reveals Stark Reality: Health Inequalities Set to Persist Through 2040 🚨 A new study by the The Health Foundation (link in comments) raises very significant concerns about health disparities across England. By 2040, the gap between the health of the most and least deprived areas will not just persist but widen unless urgent action is taken. Key findings include: 😷 A projected increase of 700,000 people suffering from major illnesses due to longer lifespans, with the burden disproportionately falling on the most deprived areas. 🏡 Residents in these areas are likely to develop serious health conditions 10 years earlier than those in the least deprived areas. 💉Chronic pain, type 2 diabetes, and mental health issues like anxiety and depression are set to surge in less affluent areas. 🔍 What does this mean? Without significant changes in healthcare provision, particularly in primary and community care and with a greater focus on prevention, we are looking at an increasingly unequal future with a significant impact on the economic health and wealth of the UK. 📢 What Should We Do?: 🔗 We need a cross-government approach that addresses the socio-economic determinants of health such as employment, housing and education. With a likely change in government eminent, this needs to be in party manifestos. 📣 Lobby government to recognise that investing in health as an asset is crucial not just for improving individual wellbeing but also for ensuring economic stability and growth. However, in a an era of low growth, austerity and a global healthcare workforce crisis, will it be possible to solve this problem? Cash is king as they say. Can we arrest this decline in health if public finances continue to be challenged? What is the alternative given if we don’t address these issues, the burden on the #NHS will likely be unbearable? #HealthInequality #PublicHealth #FutureofHealthcare #HealthPolicy #SocialDeterminantsOfHealth #healthcare Sam Shah Hassan Chaudhury Clive Flashman 💙 Neal Mankey Pilar Fernandez Hermida Naomi Azmi Lee Davies

The WHO calls health a fundamental human right, yet millions still lack access to it. Health inequities arise from factors like where we live, work, and grow up, as well as systemic issues like racism and sexism. These disparities, rooted in political and economic choices, lead to about 15,000 preventable deaths daily. Achieving health equity requires coordinated action from policymakers and healthcare providers to address these underlying causes and ensure everyone can reach their full health potential. Here are 5 P’s to closing health equity gaps: #HealthEquity #SocialDeterminants #GlobalHealth

We recently held a poll asking what percentage of health outcomes are driven by SDoH. More than 40% of respondents believed that 64% was the answer, yet SDoH can actually influence as much as 80% of health outcomes. It’s vital for payors to not only recognize the significant impact social needs can have on a member’s health, but also find solutions that identify and address these barriers to close gaps in care and improve outcomes.
