“To ensure that buildings are fit for the EU's enhanced climate ambition under the European Green Deal, the revised directive will contribute to the objective of reaching emission reductions of at least 60% in the building sector by 2030 compared to 2015 and achieving climate neutrality by 2050. It will work hand in hand with other policies of the Green Deal package, in particular with the emissions trading system for fuels used in buildings, the revised Energy Efficiency Directive (EU/2023/1791), the revised Renewable Energy Directive (EU/2023/2413), as well as the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation. Other measures in the revised EPBD include a gradual phase-out of stand-alone boilers powered by fossil fuels, starting with the end of subsidies to such boilers from 1 January 2025. “
Today, the revised #EPBD was published in the Official Journal! https://lnkd.in/dB2A5Kk9

❕❕ Tender Opportunity: Screening impact on digestate quality The Research Hub is pleased to announce a new tender opportunity for a project titled “Appraisal of the impact on digestate quality with a final screening step, from introduction of a smaller screen size.” The project aims to help operators identify effective technologies for reducing plastic contamination while preserving nutrient content of final digestate products, and to evaluate if small changes in screen size affect digestate quality factors beyond physical contaminants. The work will involve laboratory analysis of digestate samples from digesters processing various feedstocks and screened through a range of screen sizes. Key objectives include: 📊 To compare the relative proportions of nutrients and contaminants (and their nature) in the final liquor and fibre/screenings for different screen sizes used. ✅ To determine compliance of digester outputs with PAS110 for each group of screened materials. 🔎 To determine the relative significance of any differences in digestate quality identified in material screened at different screening size. The outcomes may help to determine which parameters, other than physical contaminants, may need re-validation (for PAS 110/BCS compliance) when screen size is reduced. For full details and submission instructions, see the Tender Invitation Document linked below. Questions? Contact Jackie Robinson at jackie@recc.org.uk by Friday 29th November. Submission Deadline: Friday 20th December 2024. https://lnkd.in/eKQKJbqj

A topic that is less talked about, i.e., how does Europe compare on #patents and innovation? The European Patent Office has released a study giving insights into trends in #innovation in #water-related technologies. The key findings are: 💦 Water-related technologies have represented less than 1% of of all international patent families (IPFs) filed worldwide between 1992 and 2021. 💦 Innovation in water-related technologies is dominated by water treatment, which represents a stable share of about 60% of all IPFs. IPFs in water treatment are mainly focused on wastewater and sludge treatment. 💦 Although it is primarily driven by traditional control and automation technologies, the integration of #artificialintelligence and the #InternetofThings has seen a rapid increase. Notably, European companies lead in technologies associated with the automation and control of wastewater treatment operations, whereas US applicants are more prominent in the integration of renewable energy sources 💦 Producing drinking water from open water sources represents the largest subfield within potable water harvesting technologies. The majority of IPFs in this area are associated with the #desalination of seawater. 💦 Europe has contributed 40% of all IPFs in this sector between 1992 and 2021 and holds leading positions in all water technology fields. 💦 #Universities and public research organisations (PROs) are increasingly contributing to water-related technology innovations, from under 5% of all IPFs in the 1990s to 14% by 2017-2021. Nonetheless, the European and US contributions are still below 10%.
