[GalaxySpaceNewsGH: ASRI Unveils New Suborbital Sounding Rocket Launch Facility] In a significant milestone for South Africa’s space industry, Aerospace Systems Research Institute (ASRI) engineers have commissioned a cutting-edge suborbital sounding rocket launch facility at the Denel Overberg Test Range (OTR) in the Western Cape. Funded by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), this facility is the first of its kind in the country, marking the most significant piece of space launch infrastructure constructed since the establishment of South Africa’s democracy. The new facility includes a launch gantry capable of accommodating suborbital rockets like ASRI’s Phoenix hybrid rocket, which was tested during the facility’s cold-flow propellant trial. China quietly breaking records* with Shiyan 25 (SY-25) very low earth orbit (VLEO) satellite. SY-25 has now sustained operations at an altitude of 271 km since early Sept 2023, or more than 5 months (ref graphic). Launched 20 June 2023, China state media's only disclosure on SY-25 is "this satellite will mainly be used to carry out new Earth-observation technology experiments." (SY-25 is NORAD 57047). Meanwhile, the Chinese commercial and overtly VLEO satellite QianKun-1 (QK-1) continues its slow descent - currently at 349 km (QK-1 is NORAD 57422, Int Des 2023-103B). #VLEO (Orbital data sourced from space-track.org and used with permission per ODR 24-002-4). * Update: ESA's GOCE mission flew at an altitude of 254 km for more than 3 years, followed by a shorter duration at 224 km. Peculiar. "I'm not dead yet!" PRC appears to have had at least some success recovering the surprise cislunar mission DRO-A/B. While the YZ-1S upper stage may have underperformed, additional maneuver(s) have now occurred. This helps reduce the long-term risk of debris collisions with other satellites.
